Door Rust

Okay guys - where are you having your doors fixed? I just got an estimate from a local body shop that says the ONLY way to fix the doors is replace them, total $4800 to fix! Either way, if I can find some new doors (I don't want used) I can have them painted, and mount them myself and save quite a few bucks. I can't find doors though (quad cab). Where and how are people having these rust buckets fixed!!!! Give me the ideas. I got a few grand to fix it - but not 5K!!! I'll let it rust out 1st!

You might try parts train or something like that, and maybe get another estimate I thinking that it won't be to far off, just my two cents.

You gotta love Body Shops......

Anyway, there was just a member on here who had a set of Quad cab doors wondering if it was worth it to save them, I don't think it has even been a month.

Anyway, unless you are completely rusted away 6" up the door, it isn't that hard to cut the outer skin away, cut away and replace new metal on the inner, and reskin it, the repair panels are available now.

Dig around a bit for another shop, man I should move out there and get back into the business.............

Yea I figured a couple thousand (around 2k total) and am willing to spend that (if I can get some guarantee) but 6k was nuts!!! Guess I'll just keep checking the local body shops. I can do anything on my truck except body work - never have been good. For any posters interested, it is bubbling rust currently no more than 3 inches up the door currently. One side has visible rust - the other just the paint bubbles.

If I can find doors - have them painted to match - I can swap over everything - I have no trouble - just can't find the door shells when I looked online.

I bought a pair of really pristine used doors for a regular cab for $50 each. I'm keeping them, "just in case".

Best price I got on a painted shell was from pershing auto body parts. I got a tailgate from them and it came out pretty good. Just need to spray some paraffin on the seams, the sheet metal seems to rust faster than OEM.
I bought a lower door skin for mine. Got lazy so its not mounted up yet.
you can also cut out the rusted bits and weld in new metal if you want to do the short route.
trick seems to be in the prep. when you sand to bare metal it has to be soaked with phosphoric acid. Then the primer, primer/sealer (epoxy primer), base and clear. two part urethane paints work best. Helps to have a two-tone truck so you only have to clear the lower skin and hide the seam under the door trim.
when you have a repaired door, Id also pop the door panel and spray paraffin on the inside especially down in the bottom. Then along the seam where its rolled over the door frame. This ones the most important.
Id also be wary of the front cab mounts and the frame horns at the front. sand gets in there and traps water.

I found a local body shop that will perform a repair for $300 and give me 5yr guarantee on it. For that - I'll do it every 5 years if I have to. They are going to cut it out, new metal, then undercoat inside the seam, and repaint the bottom to match. Hope it turns out good - will find out soon. Thanks for the opinions guys.

That seems a bit low. I would question them just a tickle and see what type of paint they will use and if they have any previously satisfied customers. To do it correctly will involve several hours and in my estimation at least, should be closer to 1K than 300 bucks. ( the typical 300 buck repair is slap a plate over it, tack weld it, fiberglass skim coat and lay primer and paint ) You can get it to last the 5 years, but when it comes back, the hole is huge by large.

that 300$ repair could last a good long time if you spray some paraffin in behind the repair and on the rolled seam.
I undercoated the truck with the stuff using a spray gun.. going to see how well it holds up over the winter here in the rust belt.

Try www.car-parts.com, to look for used doors.
I agree- $300 sounds low. Can you look at someones truck who had it done there?
