Question Dimmer switch wire

I'm trying to connect my gauge lights to my dimmer switch so they are both controlled by the dimmer. Does anyone know what color wire I need to splice into to do this on a 2001 ram? Thanks.

I too want to know...Anyone? Is the wiring circuit for the cigarette lighter light able to handle the extra load for 4 guages? Where do y'all suggest we tap these bad boys into??

Ashtray light is a great source of dimmable guage lighting.

Cigarette lighter has a big ole fuse on it, not problem handling 4 guages or so.

I tapped right into the fuse block with an add a circuit. Not the cheap, cheesy ones that we used to use to put a stereo in out cars, but a nice hd kind of thing. Got it at Carquest. Anyway, if you do it that way, you can tap into the 5A(I think) fuse that actually is for the dimmers. Real easy. Then you can feed the wires right up the pillar out of sight.

I tapped into the wire coming out of the headlight switch that controls the dashboard lights. Believe it was a tan wire on my 95. Easy to find with a test light and dimming the dash lights. Works great.

I think its a brown color. I just did mine and it is up by the top right if you are looking at the dimmer switch from the top. i have a o1, and its a little work to put those gauges in.

I too tapped into my switch. I believe it was a tan wire. I used a test light to find it. It works just great.

Did anyone notice that when they tapped the wire on the back of the switch, the backlighting on the headlight switch no longer worked?

This is where I tapped mine a long time ago, and after it was done I noticed that my backlight wasn't working anymore. I did a FP gauge for a friend earlier this year and tapped the same place. After the install, his backlight didn't work either. Coincidence? Or a bad place to tap?

Tan wire on every truck I've done. There are several places to tap in, I find the loom going to stereo area to be the easiest to access.

Tapped a tan or pink wire (lighting wasn't the best when I did mine -- bottom right side of connector. Works flawlessly. Used my voltmeter to read variation while moving the dimmer dial.

Didn't lose the headlight switch backlighting, but I noticed tonight that the ash tray and cup holder lights are both out. I was trying for them first, but had a hard time getting my fat hands in there! I will have to check the bulbs and connectors now.

Just an FYI for those doing a 2003 Ram 3500 QC LB 2wd , On mine the dimmer wire behind the light switch was ORANGE with a WHITE tracer line .
Found by using a probe on that wire and moving the dimmer wheel

Rick Sewid, you are requesting an answer from a member post that is last posted from September 2004.

I would suggest you check your fuses first as it seems you may have popped one during your handiwork.
