Clockspring ????

The 2000 2500 steering wheel has no resistance nor will it center itself and I assume the clockspring is worn out. What is involved in replacing it? How much of a cost am I looking at? Can one do it at home? How hard is the airbag to get out of the way? Thanks for the help!

Clockspring is nothing more than a coiled up wire pack to provide a path for the switch inputs on the wheel and air bag circuits. Has nothing to do with "resistance" in turning the wheel. From your brief description it sounds like you may have a steering box issue.

JBody is right...

The clockspring is the wiring for your cruise controls, air bag, horn, etc...

I would start with a few simple thing first...

Change power steering fluid. (If dark colored - Should be clear)
Check tire pressures and balance
Check wheel alignment
Grease steering linkage
Check for worn steering components (Trac bar, etc.)

Just a few thing to look at before the steering box...

The steering box was just replaced for the second time about 3 months ago and that one was put in because the one right before it fell out. The softening of the steering has been coming on ever since then. I can only imagine the grief I am going to get because of the stink I raised when the other one fell out. How does one find a NAPA care center that is any good?

Do a search on the steering boxes, you will find that it is very hard or expensive to replace them.
I've bought several from NAPA and all have issues. Too tight in one spot, too loose in center. Buy else where.
