Changed out fuel sending unit, dropped tank. not fun
In Canada, the sender unit was $94.00, dealer only item. The float on mine looked fine. I was going to cut a hole in the box, but there is the front cross member of the box right there and did not want to take away the integrity of the box by zip disking it. I broke the white clip thingy that goes over the red slide, it still seems to clip on ok, well see how things are after a few months of pounding around on our Canadian roads.
roger the no fun part,,,, I did it at night, in the rain, outside..on Christmas eve at my parents house after dripping fuel all across the PA turnpike. still had 1/4 tank of fuel and no jack....it is a brutal job.
It was a tie with the rotors on worlds most miserable job.

Ive had to do this one a few times while trying to sort out some air issues and other things.
Easiest way to do it is with a motorcycle jack and a wood board. You can even do it with tie-down straps across the frame. Ive done this with 1/2 tank of fuel its easy with the jack.
I installed a vulcan drawstraw in place of the stock pickup bung and ran a hose to the stock filter / suction thing in the bottom. No more 1/4 tank starvation.

did the sender in a '97 last week. tank was full to the brim. lifted the bed. one side with a jackall. blocked it up. by far the best way. I took all the bolts out with a 1/2" ratchet and short extension. only take the driverside all the way out though just loosen the pass side
you don't want to be picking the box up off the ground.
paid $70 canadian. dealer only.
you can clearly see the original float is 1/4 gone or better like bill said, other side of looks the same. pretty easy r&r once the box is blocked up.

Isn't it a joy!
Wish someone had taken a video of me trying to squiggle out from under the 'life size plastic dolphin' laying across my 125 pound body - it was a hoot that no one else will be able to enjoy watching.

And to just add insult to injury, 4 weeks after the replacement, I trade the truck for the one in my signature... I sure hope this truck was not the money pit the other one was.
