A/C blower question

My truck the a/c blower motor sucks. It doesnt blow that hard. Its plenty cold but it could use some more punch. Is this a factory thing or does it sound like I have a problem? I have checked all of the ducting and even the motor itself. Everything seems fine.

Any suggestions?

They are notorious for going out completely or in the case of mine all I have is high, all the other settings are dead. But no, I haven't seen any other complaints of just a weak blower. But anything is possible.

Yes mine sucks too. However even the weak pressure the air is more than enough cold to cool it down quick and if with the weak blower i still find myself turning it down after a short time.

Well I am in az and it is at 100 right now and only getting hotter. It blows ok if I close the passenger side vents.

I agree with Jambbii, if I close both passenger vents I get reasonable flow through the drivers vents.

It's hard to describe what "good" is for everyone. I find myself turning my fan to high (position four I believe) but eventually turn it down to position three because the fan is so noisy.

I know the evaporator is plugged up with "funk" because I can feel it when I removed the blower fan to check it. The problem is cleaning it, there is not much access through the blower opening. I used a high pressure water hose and nozzle and tried to wash as much of the funk out as possible but that may have led to my current problems.

Cleaning the evaporator convinced me that it is blocking the airflow because the fan was much quieter for a few months. The airflow on position three was more that I had on position four before I cleaned it.

My blower runs like new, but the truck has always been parked in a garage. Those who park outside with trees nearby will get their ducts, plenum, or evaporator filled with debris. Handfulls of tree twigs and leaf pieces will definitely slow down your air delivery. Disassemble the whole mess to clean it. Not easy.

So for cleaning you just pull the motor and try to remove as much crap from the evaporator. I have taken my blower motor out but never stuck my hand up there.

I've never cleaned the system in this truck. In other vehicles, the back side of the evaporator, the inlet side, is very hard to get to. That's where the debris will accumulate.

I've had to replace my blower motor twice. When they start to go you can usually whack them from below(I used to use my scraper brush) and they'll kick the speed up a little.

I also cleaned mine out with a shop vac with a piece of small (1/2") hose taped inside the big hose so I could get it down in there good. I bought my truck from a fella in North Georgia and it was filled up with pine needles.

Yep, pull the motor (three screws, 10 mm I believe) and uplug the fan. Mine had a coating of wet fuzzy crap across the majority of the fins. I tried using a toothbrush to brush it out and finally resorted to the water hose. I didn't think about hooking a smaller hose to the wet vac which would have been better in my opinion.

Mine slowed down when the coils clogged with leafs. When I saw what a hassle it was to get at the coil my solution was in the dash vent position with all the vents but the drivers side closed to blast into the open vent with a two cycle leaf blower. It was cool, looked like a waterfall of leafs coming up in front of the windshield.
To avoid this in the future I have since installed a CAB FRESH FILTER KIT from Genos.

That is funny

Good idea, like I said, I regret using the water hose because I think the water may have led to the vacuum motor failing. Either pushing debris into the door opening preventing it from working properly or corrosion.

I stuffed some rags in the floor vents and that has helped push more air out of the dash vents, I may be able to make it through the summer before I have someone tear it down.

I pulled the cowl cover and vacuumed out the pile of pine needles. Then I borrowed the neighbor's leaf blower and tried the vent trick, but nothing came out the cowl. Hopefully it cleaned the dust.
I pulled the blower motor and managed to get most of the debris using the shop vac. I removed the hard plastic end and shoved the soft corrugated hose in the ditch at the evaporator. Needed a cable tie to dig the trash out of the corners.

Well, I can see why the blower action is poor from the heater. The housing is very restrictive and not shaped well for the undersized squirrel cage blower.

Why didn't Dodge put a fine screen over the cowl vents on the Ram as the Caravan?

Maybe have to break down and get a vent fresh unit.
