Batteries wont charge

Hello everyone, I've done a fair amount of research into why my 12v wont charge its batteries. And taken several steps into finding out what's going on....with little to no luck.

So here's my problem, I have a 95 2nd gen that wont charge the batteries, like....at all. It only drains.
  • Alternator checked twice, it's good.
  • Both batteries checked, they're good.
  • Checked terminals and connections, from what I can tell they're good.
  • Replaced alternator fuse, so its good
  • Installed external voltage regulator.....still not working.
I had a shop tell me it's the crank position sensor. But that wouldn't explain why the external voltage regulator didn't work. And besides everything else works fine. A/C and cluster.

Only other sign is CE code 14 and the tranny takes awhile to shift. That's it. I'm stuck and idk what to do. If you have any idea what's going on please let me know what to try next. Otherwise its getting sold.

Thanks guys

It's always good to double check the basics, like while attempting to charge check for bad cables with a volt meter. Checking voltage from one end of a cable (main grounds and positive leads first) to the other should show zero or very close to it. Any voltage from one end to another shows a bad cable or connection.

Make sure your grid heaters are not staying energized either.

And are you positive the external regulator is wired properly with a good ground to the case?

Check all grounds you can find, including the bundle in the loom that goes over the front of the engine...the dodge factory has a strange way of grounding items on the Cummins.....
