Angry Auto door locks

Howdy y'all,

Well I did a stupid thing. I locked my keys in the truck. I was loading a box in the passenger side. I decided to start the truck first so I leaned over, stuck the key in, park brake set, gear in neutral. Start truck and then I proceed to load the box in the back seat. Shut the passenger side doors, walk around to the drivers side, pull on the handle and ... it won't open . Oh crap, walk around to the passenger side, dang, it's locked too. A cell phone call, 60 bucks, and 15 minutes later I am back in my truck. Who's brilliant idea was it to lock the doors when you turn the key on? Is there anyway top disable this feature? A search only showed me how to disable the auto lock at 15 mph, not the lock at startup. Any information would be much appreciated.

Something doesn't sound right. If you have "door lock" when you start the truck, then the 15mph "door lock" is redundant. With my '02, if there's an open door condition, it will not allow the locks to be set if the key is in the ignition. The button pops back up. I can't imagine the '01 is that much different. Did you check the manual or owners book to see if this is a set-up option?

Could you have bumped the lock button when loading the box before turning the truck on? A hide-a-key and extra key from wally world should be less than $6.

True that matt, that would be the cheapest route.

Jr, your '01 locks at start-up? Mine doesn't. Did you buy your truck brand new? If not, then the previous owner might have had the dealer activate that feature. If it really gets under your skin, you can take it to the dealer and they can de-activate that feature, but for a pretty penny I think.

Keep on keeping on,

Hunter

Didn't know that feature was available on the '01's. Mine is still at the factory setting using the 15mph.

Maybe its different for you guys with only 4 wheels..

I think it does it when I turn the key to ON, not at start. If I remeber right, it usually does it when I turn it to on an while I am waiting for the WTS light to turn off. I haven't paid much attention to it until I locked myself out. I may have bumped the lock button. It was an ackward box. On my way home from work I will check it out. I think I will disable the 15 mph lock feature.

My remote start locks the doors, when activated, and so does the 15 mph but the key 'on' does not. The door will not lock with the door open and key in ignition. Unless you push on the lock itself, instead of the switch. I was checking something out, had the door open, and remote started the truck. Without thinking, I put the key in the ignition and closed the door. You guessed it, I called my little brother, who was 45 minutes away and had a key to my truck, to come let me into my truck. Worst thing about was the truck ran for 12 minutes, and I could do nothing about it. I now have a hide-a-key.

Yeah John, I will have another key made. I like the electrical tape idea. I will probably do that one. I have never been crazy about the magnetic ones.

Thats a new one for me. I may look into doing that. I keep one in my wallet, I use my keyless entry at the pumps all of the time.

I carry a spare in my wallet, got a spare key made put in in the vise and hacksawed the supersized head down to 1/2" in width did a little fileing to smooth it up.
Tuck it in your wallet and you won't even know it's there until you need it.

After a little while out in the truck I found out an interesting thing. Doors closed, gear in park or neutral, turn the key on and the before the WTS light goes out, the doors lock. When the drivers side door is open, it won't lock. It will wait until 15 mph to lock. Now I have to find a way to disable this feature.

Friend of mine pulled into his drive and got out to open the cattle gate with the engine running. His little cab companion dog got up on the arm rest, hit the button locking the doors.
Disadvantage to living in the Montana boonies, the truck idled for three hours till a locksmith arrived. He carries a hide a key now.
