97 4x4 sits too high

Why is it that the 4x4s always sit so high off the ground?
I am going to need a foot stool to remove anything from the
bed !
Would it be possible to lower it?

Thanks,
Tom

You could remove the blocks out of the leaf packs.

4wd's sit high in the front to give the frame clearance for the front drive axle. On a 2wd the axle doesn't go all the way across, there are just spindles mounted on either side. The back is pretty much just leveled out so the truck doesn't look funny.

Thanks for your answer.
I don't think I will keep it very long after I fix the head gasket!
