96' 3500 ball joints
96' 3500 ball joints
On the 4x4 model , do you need to remove the rotors and hub assembly to get behind the spindle?
I assume the 4 wheel drive ujoints need to come out befor eyou can knock out the upper and lower joints.
If theres any trick in there, Id like to know, I have a rattle in the front drivers side that I need to isolate.
First I will try the shocks, I put on D 25s and reused stock shocks, that are probably way over due anyway.
I know all the rod ends and trak bar is in good shape, so all i can think of is ball joint or the shocks, just doesnt "feel " like it.

dually noted, how about in long?
Not looking for a full account of the project. Just last time i went to pull the rotors off to replace those very joints, i gave up and handed it over to my mechanic, tail between my legs.

Long version,
Wheel and tire off, remove 1 11/16 nut, remove caliper, remove the 4-14mm 12 point bolts from the back side of the knuckle, remove the hub/rotor assembly (do a search, socket method works well), pull axle shafts out, remove the nuts, hit knuckle with hammer a couple of times and it will fall off, PRESS out ball joints and press new ones in.
Good luck.

I doubt smoked ball joints will cause an audible rattling sound unless they are VERY badly worn and at that point you would be able to jack the truck up and shake the wheel easily by hand........shocks and worn shock bushings have been known to cause a rattle in the front end.
This may help, and other nice how to's at this site as well:
