2002 vs 2001 trucks

Hello,

I believe I have narrowed down my pick on a new/used truck to a 2001 or 2002. Can anyone tell me the differences between the 2? I've decided I want the 6SPD HO that'll come with the Dana80.

It seems like 01's have rear drums and 01.5+ has rear discs. I would really like discs unless there is an easy conversion. Basically, I hate drum brakes. Anything else I should look out for?

I'd go for a 02 from what I gather they were the cream of the crop. My 01 has also been a great truck thou.

Cool Well...

Basically they're the same truck, with the 02 actually having a few LESS options such as rear cupholders and a couple of other small detailed things like that. They do, however, have the better stock lift pump (same pump as other 98-02 but later model revisions that are "supposed" to be more sturdy) and seem to have less bugs than the earlier models aka PCM flash and other computer related stuff. I've got the 4 wheel disc and love it so I'd recommend that if you can and for what it's worth, you're more likely to find an 02 still under warranty than you are an 01.
Just my .02.

Looks like you and I are competing! I've been following the whatsis on eBay regarding 2500 diesels for a couple of weeks now. I've found some very interesting eyeopeners. First off, wathcing 4 year old trucks with in excess of 100,000 miles going for $20,000 or more is something else. And looking at some of the Buy It Now prices for trucks with 2001's with 150k or 170k miles is stupifying! Yes, I know the CTD is a durable workhorse, so durable a workhorse that they didn't need to refer to its durability in the name, a la some OTHER manufacturer. But the fact is, you STILL will own a 4 year old truck with 170,000 miles on all of the OTHER components.
I suggest looking up in the Michigan area. I've found the best combination of price and mileage from up that way.

Still lookin for my 01 2500 CTD 4WD long bed quad.

Texas has a lot of trucks also and they don't have all of that winter rust.

My 2002 is still on the factory lift pump and has never been back to the dealer for anything - no warranty problems whatsoever! That is a key reason I ordered this truck instead of waiting for a 2003 - I felt the 2002, being the last of the 2nd generation trucks, should be the most thoroughly debugged model available. So far, my rationale seems to be right.

Good point

That's why I took mine. 2003 is plenty full of bugs right now.

Texas has a LOT of work trucks and rust free. You see em all with big bumpers, headache racks and welded in GN hitches

I missed an 01.5 6spd HO SLT 4x4 with 100K miles by 100 bucks this morning, it ended for $17.7k. I feel like that is a very reasonable price... (?). KBB "retail" on it was ~$22k

FWIW, this was it:

I've noticed that Texas DOES have a lot of 'em! But they also command a premium down that way too.

Clean carfax report. And a reasonable buy it now price if you look down in the listing.
If it's in your price range, I'd say give it a go!

i bought a 01 in utah for 24,250 that had 46,000 miles on it. totaly loaded, chrome step bars, chrome rocker panals, spray in bed liner, leather, heated seats. I just replaced a lift pump and fixed a rear output seal though. also have a little bit of a problem with it starting when its hot. I think it may be the injector pump?
