why the draw straw?

I have a 1999 with the updated in-tank style lift pump that has died, so I installed a inline Airtex pump & Its pumping through the dead stock pump. ive got plenty of fuel pressure 15psi at idle. So ,is it really necessary to use a draw straw with my combination?
thanks

Yes. The in-tank pump provides a significant restriction on the suction side, causing the pump to work harder than it has to.

The in-tank pump assembly has a extra hose going in to it, could you just use this rather than a draw straw?
