What temp should it be ?

My temp gauge seems to always show a low reading . I'm going to use a buddies laser thermometer to check the actual coolant temp . What would be an ideal coolant temp ? If it is in fact low , how do I go about correcting it ? What temp thermostat should I be running ? 99 CTD 5 speed manual . Thanks

I've had the same problem ever since I bought my truck. I normally run about 160 degrees. I even replaced the expensive thermostat and I've constantly got the same temps. I figure the gauge must be off. If I'm towing it might get a little higher, but not much.

I guess your stat may be stuck open. That's what I thought with mine, but that wasn't it.

I think you should run about 180-190. Mine runs too cool, also. I'm going to change my thermostat and see if that will fix it.

Are you fellas talking about the gauge in the bottom left corner of the instrument panel?

Here is a pix of how hot I run. Also checked the coolent tempature at the Tstat housing on the head, it read about 185

This was about a year ago, on I-10 in Phoenix, stopped in traffic.

I put a 190 degree thermostat in yesterday from NAPA ($23,) and it did the trick. I was only running between 120 and 140, but now am right at the 190 mark. It was an easy fix. I am talking about the factory guage in the instrument panel.

I did the calculation to find out that my guage is in Celcius So no wonder I am "running" lower than you guys according to the gauge

Thanks
