What speed is most fuel efficient?

In light of current fuel prices, I thought I'd throw this out there. At what highway speed would be most fuel efficient for distance traveled based on MPG and MPH?

Thumbs up

I havent been able to verify if this is actual mileage yet, (new VP44 yesterday) but my OHC was reading out 26-27 mpg with the cruise set at 57mph all the way home from the shop. (1400 rpms, and about 50 miles total distance traveled). My tank is full of B20 biodiesel. (Also, most of eastern South Dakota is flatter than a pool table.)

I would guess 22mpg's would be more realistic.......I'll check it by hand next time I get a chance.

I drive alot of highway miles for work. Believe it or not I see the best milage ~20 at ~75-80 mph. I've drivin an entire tank at 60-65 mph several times thinking my milage would go up but I've never been able to top the milage I see near 80 mph. These are accurate milage readings, not what I get on the OHC. I keep a detailed log.

I usually get the best mileage around 60 to 65..........mpg also all depends on tire size, gearing, and that type of stuff

From what I've gathered from reading over the past couple of years, Anything above ~65mph and the aerodynamics come into play.
Our trucks have a huge frontal area and the faster you go, the faster the milage will drop.

Same here.
You can see the overhead mpg readout drop like a rock after you pass through 65.

Tried keeping it at 65 for one day, didn't work, have to go with the flow.

As crazy as it may sound right now, I'm going to be taking a 1000 mile trip this next week… I changed my fuel filter last night (at felt peppier on the pedal too, could be my imagination though), aired up tires to max pressure for less rolling resistance too. I'll set the cruise on about 60 for the first tank and hand calculate my mileage and see what I get… Any other ideas to increase mileage for cheap or free?

Get one of these and mount it to your front bumper.
It won't work when following a car with plastic bumpers, but should be great if following a Big Rig. (just not too close.)

I get my best mileage at 72mph with the comp in EZ mode set on 2X2 and the cruise control on. I can consistently get 20mpg doing that. Below 72 and the engine lugs and above it it screams.

65 fer me, and I get 23-24 mpg.

Keeping the tires air up is a good thing, and its free.

Planning your trips is also a good thing.

Easy on the peddle at stop lights is good too.

For a completely stock truck... (Check Signature)

55 MPH = 19 MPG
65 MPH = 17 MPG
75 MPH = 16 MPG

I keep a detailed log of all fuel since new... My current average is below in the signature.

I have posted this before and it is always disagreed with but once again. Over drive on a manual eats fuel. If you are really serious about mileage, drop to direct, 5 on the six speed or 4 on the five speed. Hold the rpms at 21 or so and you will get max mileage.

If you were setting up from scratch, the right rear axle ratio and a direct high gear would be the best mileage. Each gear mesh costs a certain percentage of fuel economy and it is quite a bit.
