Finally figured out where to put the trans temp guage (see pic)....what is a "normal" running temp and what should the never exceed temp be?

 

Nice looking gauges ya got there. Mine will run about 150 to 160 most of the time it has gone as high as 220 sitting in traffic in the summer. Not sure what the temp for overheating would be, Someone will know. The gauges really look good. ;D

 

Here in Phx. it is fairly easy to get to 200* with a DTT TC in stop and go traffic. I'll shift to N when at red light.

The cooler the better, but I'd avoid anything above 225* if you can help it.

Oh, and this is post TC temp (a la the '97 coolant line), not pan temp. Pan temp measurement is useless.

 

Does anyone know it there is a difference in temp readings from putting the sender in the top of the transmission(there's 3 ports that have plugs that the sender will fit) or putting it into the pan and how much?

My sending unit is in the pan, and towing the 5th wheel today it ran about 110 degrees. It didn't do much less running empty (103) which I thought would be much less. I do notice it climb right up to 145 or so in traffic.I didn't give it much of a workout tho but will get the chance when I go to Montana this weekend...

 

As the tranny fluid temp goes up, the lifespan of the fluid quickly drops. If the temp goes over 270 degrees, I believe that the useable life of the fluid can be measured in hours. The temperature sensor should be in the line that runs out of the transmission to the cooler. That line gives you the most useable temp reading. The temp in the pan can be significantly lower, which can lull you into a false sense of security. You can be thinking that the tranny is fine, when it's actually being turned into a slowcooker. If your temps run close to the upper limits, check the fluid often. If it smells burned, or is a dark color, heed the warning.

This is an interesting post. I don't have gauges and don't pull anything (Yet!) but do 4x4. I am concerned now about the tranny temp. when mud slingin'.....I would assume that this could bring thet temp. up too? Anyway, I have a friend in Tejas who burned his tranny just idleing in park on a hot summer day. My understanding is that the fluid does not recirc. in park but does in drive and neutral. Does this sound like a major design flaw or what???? Just my 0.02

 

I think a tranny temp guage is very much a "must have" with the Dodge transmissions.
I as of yet don't have one, pull nothing, and occasionally go 4 wheelin.
I will be getting one soon.

Correct, the fluid doesn't circulate in park.

Mine was around $150. Check with some of the vendors on this site and they'll get you hooked up.

I haven't actively priced guages yet.
Figured I'd wait till I actually had the money to spend.

Figuring about 500 for the set (Pyro, Boost, Tranny, Fuel Pressure), maybe up to 700 installed.

Will probably hit up Sheep and Penguin boy when it's time ;D

Could you guys explain where you installed your sender in the hot line out. (newbee here, not quite sure which one is the hot line out either) I was looking the other day and I saw the steel lines coming out of the tranny on right and left side. I assumed it was the left(driver) side and followed that to some sort of device a few feet infront of the tranny and a little higher. I saw a short piece of hose there which is hard to get at but I thought that was where the compression fittings and T were put in the line. Any help would be appreciated
