What happened to my 01.5 HO?

Weird! I was at the drive thru window for lunch today. Put the Clutch in, turned off motor to make my order. (Noisy 24 valve!)
Started back up and drove to the payment window. Pushed in clutch and brake, reached for wallet. Truck tries to keep going forward. Engine controller is adding fuel, Im stomping brake and clutch, trying to pop it out of 2nd. It wont shift out of gear, and is slipping the clutch plate but the triuck is barely creeping forward. (good 4 wheel disc brakes on those 01.5s!) Clutch feels like it is totally gone, no effort to the pedal, goes to the floor, truck is stuck in gear.
So I shut off the engine, then push clutch in again. It has resistance now. Stinky clutch burning smell from the weirdness though!
I take it out of gear, restart, push in clutch, shift into 2nd, and drive on with no problems.
What happened??!!
TIA, -Zooka

Well there's one I haven't had.

Did you check the fluid in the clutch reservoir?

Something caused the clutch linkage to stay engaged when you pushed the clutch in???

Sounds like a slave cylinder or master cylinder problem. According to the service manual, the whole works is replaced as a unit, so you can't just replace on part. So it says, anyway.

Mine did the exact same thing. I just about ran into the back of a ford at the Nationals at indy this last year. I also had to shut it off on the interstate, it was stop and go traffic and it just started going. Wouldn't come out of gear. It's pretty scary feeling.

But anyways, it's more than likely your master cylinder bleeding off pressure. Throw in the upgraded hydraulics from SouthBend. You'll be ready for a monster clutch after that.

try sitting at a light when the slave goes and it launches you out into traffic. luckily the ol' goat's got the power to get the h. e. double toothpicks out of the way.

Thanks, guys, after I thought about it I thought it might be the master or slave cylinder too. THe weird thing was that it only happened once! After I started it back up it has not happened again!
I even drove it out to the deer lease and got a load of firewood today, had to sit on the clutch a feww times and no problems. But I will go ahead and get a new master/slave as recommended. Is it a pain to install, like pulling the transmission?
BTW, I got 16 MPG going out, the put a good glop of Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank whan I got there (about 120 miles, I had forgotten to do it when I filled up before leaviong town) and then got over 19 MPG coming back pulling a 5x8 trailer loaded with about a cord of wood! Truck seemed quieter and happier too. Might have been a tailwind? But 19 towing a light trailer in hilly country is awesome.

The swap out is pretty easy, its just in a cramped area. Unbolt the rod from the clutch pedal, undo the safety switch, and twist the master out. Unbolt the reservior, and 2 bolts on the slave on the tranny.
