What axle's do I have?
I have searched this site for some time now and also going through my pdf manual on DVD and still don't know what axles I have. I have a Quad Cab 2001 Dodge Ram Diesel 2500 4x4. It is a 6-speed manual.
I have found on this site where it refers to a DANA 60, 70, 80, and others. My manual on DVD refers to two possible axles I could have in the front and four possible axles I could have in the rear. The manual lists the following:
The Differential Cover Tags have the following on each of them.
Front Tag:
52070136AK
3.54 611154-1
Rear Tag:
52069476AG
3.54 606272-1
Am I looking in the wrong place to figure out which axles I have? Any ideas?

I needed to get a couple things at NAPA today and called them. They said look at the tag on the differential cover and it should say Dana 60, 70, ..., but I could not find anything of the sort.
Engraved on the front differential cover is the following (not the tag which is bolted on, but engraved in the cover):
DANA
419492-1
300-00
REV-U
012599
...again nothing that gives me a clue to a Dana 60, 70, 80, ...

To clarify Dana's new way of naming their differentials, the number refers to the crown gear diameter in millimeters.
The letters describe the style of housing.\
RBI= Rear Beam Iron
FBI= Front Beam Iron
RBA= Rear Beam Aluminum
Therefore, a 286RBI = a rear axle, beam style (as opposed to independent), built from iron, with a 286mm crown gear (11.25 inches) = Dana model 80.
Just another worthless piece of trivia for everyone to try to remember.

All great information, but does anyone know how one takes the Differential Tag information (see my 1st posting) and magically convert that to a specific axle?
torquefan, thanks for that information on how Dana has decided to rename things. Unfortunitely I have the differential covers back on and sealed so I can only view the outside at this point.

I called four local Dodge Dealers here in CO and talked to Parts and based off the last eight characters of the VIN# they could tell me that this truck was manufactured with a Dana 60 Front Axle and a Dana 80 Rear Axle.
I asked them about how one converts the Differential Tag informaton to a specific axle and they had no idea. They did say if you talked to a differential/drivetrain speciality company they might be able to convert the tag infromation.
There parts data did say the Dana 60 Front Axle was a 248FBI, but the Rear Dana 80 had no such reference. At least I can tell NAPA/AutoParts which axle I have with some confidence moving forward.
From a home shop servicing perspective I am going to assume that the 2889 page DVD Manual I have on the "2001 Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500" is that I have the largest rear axle listed which is the REAR AXLE - 286RBI.
Would you guys concure?

Go to Dana's website. There is a place on there that you take your BOM number (the number behind the gear ratio) and it will spit out part numbers and identify the model and gear ratio, and other such things.
http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/departid.aspx
Not the one that I used before, but it gives you an exploded view and identifies the axle.

Look in the glove box for the white plastic sticker. If the sticker is there it will tell you. Dodgde used to put the sticker there but quit but I don't remember which year.
You can stop by the dealer service dept and ask then to run and print out a "build sheet" for you. It will tell you what you want to know and answer most other questions you could ask about how your truck was built.
