Weird dying & fuel pressure problem

Friend of mine has a 98.5 24valve auto with ~200K on the clock. 2 years ago it was having some weird start issues and had to have the ECM replaced. I was in the hospital at the time so I wasn't that involved with the diagnosis and repair.

A couple weeks ago the truck lost fuel pressure (in cab fuel pressure gauge) and died on him in the driveway. He replaced the lift pump with a new one from Cummins. All was well until the other day he said he started it up, and it did the same thing, died and had no fuel pressure. It wouldn't start again. Disconnected the batteries, let it sit for a minute, reconnect, and it started right up and was fine all day. Same thing happened the next day.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Haven't had a chance to look at it yet for him, but I am thinking something in the ECM again. Getting to the point that we are wanting to P pump it.

No check engine, so I am assuming no codes. Would the module in the VP44 cause the lift pump not to cycle?

Nope but a bad ECM, wiring connection and/or bad brushes will.

That is what I am afraid of, since the fuel pump relay seems to be solid state, I am afraid it is the ECM again.

What would cause the death of the ECM like that? I believe the dealer installed the last one.

Make sure all of the ECM grounds are good. All of these systems you mention are ground controlled.
