Question VP44 Pump Suggestions, better MPG

The time has finally come for my 1998.5 2500 truck to need a new VP44 injection pump. I have known this day would come and at 106,000 miles the timming portion of my pump failed. My questions for all you wise and expirenced folks are as follows:

1) Where is the best place to get a replacement pump and get the most bang for my buck?
2) I would like to gain a little MPG and HP if possible so should I be looking at something other then a stock pump?

I have already made the following upgrades to my truck to date:
1) 4" exhaust from the turbo back.
2) K&N cone style air filter conversion.
3) Edge Juice performance chip with attitude monitor.
4) BullyDog Tripple Lock torque converter, with high flow trans oil pump.

I have not invested in a high flow fuel transfer pump yet but the attitude monitor gives me fuel pressure and I'm never below 5psi. This truck is my daily driver and is not used for racing. I have been getting 14mpg on my 55mph comute to work and would like to improve on that. I have the higher gear ratio (can't remember what it is exactly) so my engine rpms are about 1500 at 55mph.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this is a big expence for me so I only want to do this once.

Thanks,

i have been doing a bit of research on this as well. i don't need one yet, but i fear it may not be long . . . so i have been proactive to get all my ducks lined up when it does eventually go on me.

i have done only a little bit of research and so far, although more expensive, the Special X VP44 from Blue Chip Diesel seems to be a winner. I have been all over his site, and searched various forums. Not a bad thing to be said about the pump itself - just the price which is higher than others.

Call Blue Chip Diesel Performance and ask about the "X" pump.

I do not see any advantage for 'Agtech' to get Special X pump.... with his Edge Juice! Am I missing something?
I have the X pump from Chip and can say I noticed right off how my engine ran better (smoother) than last time I replaced the VP-44 with a $1,000 pump.
I'm convinced Chip does do a better job on VP-44's than the price oriented shops! Theirs are not bad but his are better. In his case you do get what you pay for.

I believe that Midwest Fuel Injection's VP44 version, model #M15VP44HPX, is a better deal, both in performance, and in price. Take a look for yourself and make your decision.

VP44 Feedback

I called and talked to both Blue Chip Diesel and Midwest and got some feed back from both. Both places offer a one year unlimited mile warranty on all of their VP44s. Midwest made it clear that installing my Edge Juice on the new pump would void the warranty. I was impressed however with Blue Chip Diesel. Blue Chip seems to be more understanding that there will be power chips added to their pumps. In addition Blue Chip informed me that if I purchace their pump cover to install my Edge Juice they will still honer the warranty in event of a failure. In addition to the warranty the Special X pumps are built primarly of new parts making them less of a reman pump but closer to new.

Both places were very helpfull over the phone and took time to answer all of my questions. I will be hard pressed to put 15,000 miles on the truck in a year so I'm not sure the warranty means a whole lot to me at this point. Have any of you that might be running the Special X pump noticed an increase in fuel millage after installation?

Thank You to every one who responded so far!

Well I bit the bullet, let the moths out of my wallet and ordered a Special X Blue Chip VP44 with the optional cover. Once I get the new pump installed and have a chance to put a few tanks of fuel thru it I will post my thoughts on the pump. I have detailed recoreds of calculated MPG from the last 5 years so I will have a good comparison.

I want to thank you all again for the helpfull information. The best decision is an educated decision.

Sincerely,

Definately post our results. My pump is knocking on 215K and I know it won't be long before I have to bite the bullet as well.

i read all the positive talk and paid the 2,000 plus too cover two in may of this year for the X pump. this december i get code 0216 and dead pedal. called blue chip and heard what contaminated fuel did i put in there? been uising the same place for fuel all the time. called them, no other complaints. he is hinting it's my fault, it can't be faulty fuel pump. 2,000 dollar pump that lasts as long as a 600 dollar pump is what i see. i saw no improved fuel milage, no improved nuthing, service, warranty, over the phone help. just price.
