Got my call back from Cummins customer service rep. He Told me to have the truck fixed and fax them the paid bill and they would cover 700.00 towards the repair. Is this because they know the vp44 is prone to problems? I dont really care. Basically I am paying for a new pump and getting it installed for free. Then since I will have the bill from the dealer anyway, I might as well try Thomas's approach.

Wurkenman,

Take a look in your warranty book, and you will read there in black and white that you IP is still covered under warranty. I have a 2002 as well and I have warranty through 2010 and 136K miles according to the warranty book. I think I'd laugh at the $700 and say "No, You'll pay for all of it".

I bought mine at Forest Lake, and last time I was in there they told me that I only had 2 months of warranty left. I plan on making a trip over there and showing them my warranty book showing then that they are wrong and I will be back for my free VP when it takes a P@@P.

I don't understand while the dealers are so resistant to honor the warranties that are printed in the manuals. They sure as heck pimped the warranty when I bought the truck!!!!

I will insist that the dealer pay for all of it. This is directly from cummins that the 700 is coming from. After the work is done then I go see my lawyer and take my documention to the dealer. I just thought it was a stand up thing for Cummins who is not obligated at all to do anything was willing to pay 700 towards the cost of the part.

"Wurkenman", good for you, go for it & please keep us posted thru the whole process! Many of us will end up in the same boat!

A related question. I was about to order the Lift Pump "relo kit" from Geno's and move the pump to the rail by the fuel tank. My truck is 5 years old in June 07 but only has 52k miles on org lift pump and I-pump. Sounds like I should leave it stock till June 2010 and just monitor the fuel gauge.

Feedbaack on this idea please!!!

Thanks, Bill

I can't see how it would hurt at all to relocate the LP. If anything it would help.

Hey, this is all transferable too. You don't have to be the original owner for there to be a warranty. I went through Daimler/Chrysler and got a free paint job on my first gen 93 that I bought new (delaminating paint is the official 25 cent term they used) tho they didn't paint the whole thing. When I called their bluff and said that I'll just wait until ALL the paint fails they fired back that their "offer" for a new paint job would only be honored (another big word for these guys) for 180 days from the date I notified them. And this had NOTHING to do with the warranty either, according to D/C. Anyway, I settled for what they offered but they only painted what was failing, which was almost the entire truck anyway. But if I had that to do over, I would've went and saw a lawyer if for nothing other than some advice, not representation.
This seems a bit more cut and dry and it's in writing right there in your glove box. There doesn't seem to be much wiggle room on this one to me. They're skating on thin ice and they know it.
Great stuff to know and IF my IP takes a dump before 136k miles they'll remember me real quick at Tacoma Dodge!!!!

Wurkenman, if I relocate the LP, then Dodge will have another reason to say my warranty is void, correct?

The VP44 on my truck is now in the process of taking a dump too. I am the original owner and have always paid close attention to fuel pressure, filter changes etc. But the one thing that I did not know until recently as always reading the forums on here is that on my 2002 you can read the codes from the odometer which I did not know but wished I had last year when my lift pump took a dump at the 100,000 mi. mark. Dealer "claims" there was no death codes present at that time and would only change out the LP. So my question is this: who out there has had a new VP44 installed as per the 2002 warranty claim that the 5/100 starts after the 3/36 ends? I have read this warranty on Dodge's website and am planning a call to Chrysler. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. I am at 125,000 on the od. now.

Look on the first page of this topic and read Thomas. He was awarded the top prize and has the documentation to prove it. I am going in loaded with his ammo in tow.

Wow! This made my month! My 02 has 129K and is throwing the 0216 with hiccups, may be an electrical issue though but thats another thread. Now i just need to determine if i should take it to the dealer or to a mechanic. Thomas, thanks for the info!!! I will be prepared for a fight, but wow, what a relief!

Vp44

Ill see if I can help you with your warranty question, I work at a Dodge Dealer as a tech, Shoot me the vin off your truck and Ill find out for sure if the IP is covered. Same way I found out for a buddy of mine, he had a dead VP and LP, with 3 months left of warranty. So we got it covered and I installed it and all is good now.

Cheers

Yes!
I'm not saying that by relocating your LP the warranty on your VP44 is automatically void, but it will give them more ammunition. They could argue that by tampering with the LP you contributed to the VP44's failure and therefore you are responsible, not them. I've heard that some dealers will automatically reject your claim if they see a set of gauges, they figure that if you have gauges then you must have a programmer or a fuel box, and that's their ticket to wiggle out of the warranty.

Do you have a name and a phone number of the Cummins rep?

I just replaced mine with one from http://www.mwfi.com/. Cost $1059 with shipping, no core charge for one month.

Got the pump replaced to the tune of 2200.00 plus change. Now the battle will ensue. I will be looking into a pressure gage as well, and another fuel pump. Will the holley blue or black suit my purpose? Where is a good place to get a pressure gage.
