Truck Shakes....BAD

Here is the business. I got 4 new 285/75/16 BFG A/T KO. They were fine at first, but now there is a serious shake in the truck. I mean the whole truck is shaking, it starts in the back end, you can see the bed shaking if you were to follow me. My buddy did and noticed it.

The shake starts at 40mph, and sometimes goes away and sometimes stays up till about 55mph.

I have been to the tire place 2x to get them to address the situation, they have re-balanced the tires twice, both times saying they threw a weight. Manager says the wheel "hopped" a little while spinning up, but balanced out just fine. After the second time he said he was gonna get with the shop that installed the tires to get his distributor and get some new tires (bought tires in FL now in GA). Now they want me to take it into the dealership. The dealership has the truck, and am waiting to see what's up.

I have seen some posts on this issue, but I really don't know what it could be besides the tires since it didn't start till I put the new tires on.

Any input would be appreciated.

James

The MPH sounds a little slow for a tire shake. U-joint possibly. Tire vibrations are usually faster at 55-75mph.

Just because a tire is "balanced" doesn't mean it can't shake you out of the vehicle. You need to find a shop that has one of these:

Thanks for the reply. Is there anything else it could be?

The dealership says the tires are not inflated properly, about 10lbs off. Also, they are telling me that the inside is wearing faster than the outisde (13/32 vs 15/32).

I am not a mechanic, but I do not feel either of these things will cause the shake I have mentioned.

I need to get this figured out soon.

Any half way decent tire guy should be able to look at the tire while its on the machine and see if there is run out. When I used to work for a tire shop in town, we had the old machines that didn't have any run out sensors on it. The Ford dealership did. Their machines weren't setup properly, and they'd send a tire on even when it was in poor shape. My moms truck had two seperated tires on it that they ignored, but you could visibly see while spinning.

Anyway, back to the original post. If the tire has a hop, get it replaced. Could just be out of round, or could be seperated. I'm guessing the latter, if it developed over time. This would also cause an imbalance, so they might have thought you chucked a weight (did the ever see any evidence of a missing weight?)
