transfer pump problem
transfer pump problem
I have only 24K on my '02 2500. While cruising down the hwy, the check engine light came on and the power dropped off. I took it to the local dealer to have it checked it out and they came back with bad news. They said it was the transfer pump. The good news was that for $3,900 they would retrofit a new transfer pump, injection pump, etc. They worked on it for the majority of two days and they "fixed" it. While I was driving back home (45 minutes from the shop), the check engine light came on again. I called them about it and of course they want me to bring it back. I'm gong to take it back to them but I have 3 questions. 1. Did I get hosed? 2. What should I be asking them about their gold plated fuel pump replacement? 3. What should I do next?
I think you got hosed, try the key-ignition trick to check for any codes. Turn your key to the run position and then off, on , off. do it three times and on the third leave in the run position and write down the code numbers that will most likely show up. I believe its fairly easy on this site to research what problems are related to codes your truck is throwing.

You must read the news papers if you think that is good news.
Unfortunately, you could have replaced the vp44, got an aftermarket lift pump (like a FASS) and had it installed for well less than that.
Get the codes pulled and post them here. If you know what is wrong, then you can go back to whoever did that to your truck and negotiate a repair. Did they give you any kind of warranty?
we had this same thing happen to us about a month ago. Yes you got hosed on the pump because it cost us $1800 total for the lift pump and injector pump and labor.
then our truck did the same exact thing as yours did and its the crankshaft censor and from Cummins the part is right at $42 with tax .. if you are handy .. you can put it on yourself. I can see if I can find the article that had detailed instructions to replace it
if your truck loses power, the check engine light came on, the RPM tack no longer works but the speedometer does .. can guarantee its the crankshaft sensor

As suggested, I got the codes.

Just a quick update. I took it back to the dealer for the latest problem and after three hours, they traced it down to a loose plug. Probably from the tech that worked on it yesterday. They checked and drove it again and it got the thumbs up... so far. I brought the warranty info to them and I asked them to check if any of the pump replacement work was covered. (7 years or 70,000 miles) After approx 30 minutes, they said the injector pump might be covered but the retrofit lift pump was not. They were going to contact corporate HQ and the service manager for a definitive answer.
it would be covered for the 7yrs 100k engine warranty. The work they did is assigned a certain amount of hours to do id ask them how much of that was labor $$, caus those repair shouldn't have taken more then 4 hrs total time especially for a mechanic with a lift, and u should have pulled the codes before all of this happened cauz the apps code might have been the prob all along. your vp might not have needed replacing.

Those dealers are unbelievable with what they charge us for parts & labor! I had a dealer replace the vp44 & they only used 2 of the 4 bolts to attach it to the block. Since that debacle I've taken my truck to the Cummins service center & let them do the work. They charge about the same for labor but their prices for genuine Cummins parts are almost half what Dodge dealers charge. Most importanty, they know what the heck they're doing.
J.Suplanski, I went to Cummins Cumberland in Louisville, KY. I don't know where you live but they have locations in KY, WV, IN, ILL, and TN. You will be shocked at their parts prices for parts vs Dodge dealers who just put a little Mopar sticker on the same part. Plus, you can 100% trust that their mechanics do the job right cause Cummins engines are all they work on (our trucks & semis), whereas the guys at Dodge work on mostly gas engines. If you don't live in or near the states listed above, I'm sure there's a Cummins service center near you.
