Trans cooler line disconnects

Trans cooler line disconnects
TO:disconnect the inlet and outlet lines at the transmission oil to water cooler
What exactly am I missing. I hear them go "CLICK" as I tug on them back and forth, yet they don't release. What's the secret handshake for removing this line?
Do they have retaining clips holding them on I can't see cause of the gunk?
