Tranny ? shudder

Just got back from trip to Oregon pulling my fifth wheel. In mountains when I would hit a big grade sometimes it feels like tranny is shuddering. If I turned OD off it would stop. Also when taking off from a stop when tranny is warm
(180) trans seemed sluggish, not really slipping just didn't feel like it was putting power to rear wheels unless I feathered throttle. Also noticed when not pulling trailer when truck was not warmed up trans would act like low fluid situation going around corner( shows full on dipstick at operating temp)
Truck only has 38,000 miles on it and I just changed filter and pan fluid.Checked fluid ,not discolored or smelling burnt. Trans is stock.
Thanks
George

Mine has just started doing the same thing, but after I just installed taller tires. I went to 35 in Toyos. I had recently taken a trip to eastern washington with only gear and 2 dirtbikes and when I came up to a grade I noted the same thing your taking about but I noted my rpms where real low around 1100 in the 60 zone which is below the torque curve for my diesel, also the pyro gauge spiked high. When I took overdrive out and brought the rpms up it was fine and the pyros dropped.

Before the tire change I never had this......and any towing I have never used overdrive.

Also a note: Not to step on toes cause some here like to but, I believe any of our trucks should not be towing in overdrive, hard on the tranny.

T/C clutch

I would think that with the OD on and low RPM's, that the shudder comes from the T/C lock up clutch slipping. Before I rebuilt mine it would do the same thing. The T/C locks up with OD on in fourth gear, OD off and it will lock up in third. Low RPM's gives lower hydraulic pressure and therefore less apply force for the lock up clutch (as far as I know).
I believe an updated valve body would help out.

sounds like you TC is on the way out the door. i would go ahead and get a better TC and replace the VB as well the V is what applies the pressure for the lock up aftermarket valve body will apply a little more pressure to the TC lockup. give Dusty at HTS a call or Tim (timinva) from DTT and let them know what your using your truck for and they will let you know what you need and give you a price. they are both great guys to deal with.

This could be true but
who wants to tow at 45 milean hour wound right out i mean isnt the truck practically wound right out at 70 in third gear my opinnion is 47re or 48re are not built for towing period from what ive seen and its sad to say it

Will be louder but no where near "wound out" ... unless you have 4.10 rear end. Remember the Cummins 5.9 will run all day long at 3000 rpm!
I disagree the Autos don't tow well...but keeping rpm's up is essential!
Never let them get below 1800 rpm and all is good, IMO.
(Of course, having a DTT Valve Body and TC makes a big difference.)
