Torque Converter "Shudder"

Took a 1500 mile trip this weekend, towing a trailer that was about 7000 lbs. I noticed the RPM's increase slightly under acceleration on a hill with the TC locked up, in both drive and OD. On the way home it did the same thing and also started to shudder. I guess it would be fair to call it moderate acceleration. It doesn't do it under light acceleration. Any idea's on a fix?

Original tranny with 108K. I have an EZ, AFE, and 4" exhaust, everything else is factory.

You can try boosting the line pressure. DOing that might save you for awhile.

Phil:

That "shudder" you describe is not good!! It is most likely
your torque converter "beginning" to go. I had it my 1996
Dodge CTD and let me tell you it will only get worse buddy!
Sounds to me like you need an ATS TripleLok like we talked
about a few months ago. You can try raising the line pressure
like "Smokee" said, but it is only a "temporary" fix. If your TC
is going bad that extra heat is going to get transferred to
the clutch packs and seals so don't wait to long.

Good luck!

Thanks guys,

I am going to raise the line pressure this weekend, and start saving money for the "impending" upgrade!! So what's up John? did Johner get his "envelope"? I hope!

Raise the line pressure 3-4 turns and get fresh fluid in it.
MOST likely it is slipping the 3rd gear clutches. Also called direct clutches.
Good luck with it.

Mine did that about six months ago pulling the race rig. I put a new torque convertor in (another stocker....warranty). The front of mine was the prettiest purple and blue right where the lock up clutch is.

yeah that's what it's doing, it is downshifting. hey by the way, do you have any problems pulling your boat up the ramp in 2WD or do you always use 4WD ?.

I use 4 low to pull the boat out. Makes it much easier.
