temp gauge

hi all,
i've had a 99 3500 for 2 years now and the temp gauge has never worked. if i pull my 34 5th wheel at 70 it will go to 140, but it usely stays at the bottom. went to the dealer for info on the sending units,(a waste of time as usual), but found out real quick i probably knew more than he did. i was wondering if i could leave everything hooked up, take out one of the galley plugs in the head, and just put one of the after market gauges that we all put in our hotrods at one time or another? ???

Re:temp gauge

I put a sending unit in the 1/4 pipe threaded plug just behind the thermostat housing. It works ok. Used a 1/4 to 1/8 inch pipe adapter and a 1/8 sending unit to a Westach combo temp. gauge other side of gauge to trans. line for trans. temp. This is on my 99 2500. Talk to you later grwhite.

Re:temp gauge
thanx for the reply. i guess i'll go and get one tomorrow and hook it up. think i'll put it in the ashtray so that i can close it up when not needed. it just goes to show you that you can do alot to a truck yourself even if the dealer says you cant.
talk at ya later,dave.
