Has anyone add experience swapping out the diff gears on a 4x4 2500 cummins? I would like to no what it entails to do a job like this? Or the cost of having it done.

If you know what you are doing, it's not a bad job. The use of teh correct tools is critical and most guys don;t want o obtain a case spreader, dial indicator on a mag base and a good inch/ lb torque wrench. Let alone the other small parts, shims, spare bearings for setup, ect.

If you are only going to ever do it once, take it someone that knows how to properly setup gears. If you plan on doing this many more times in the future, get a book and give it a try. Expect the first few sets to have issues if you don't get any guidance from someone that knows what they are doing. But it can be done.

A shop will charge between $200-$500 labor plus gears and parts per axle depending on make, in the vehicle or not, ect. I would make some calls to get an accurate quote.

Might need new carriers as well as a 3.73 or 4.10 seems to be the make or break in carrier sizing.

You could throw on a set of 35" tires & be done with it, worked wonders for me.

I agree w/Fishin...as this is not really something you want to tackle as a DIY project....especially for the first time! I would pay to have it done. Have you looked into 3:73 as the 3:55 may be too high of a gear ratio if you plan on doing any significant towing. One point to consider, there is an additive you must include upon install inorder for the gears to "break-in" properly w/out it, things will self destruct. My buddy had this happen on his dodge 1500 and the installer had to clean and replace everything. JMO.

The cutoff is between 4.56 and 4.88 so he's good there.

I want to go the other direction, wanna swap?

Mines 02 with rear disc brakes, 140K, BUT only a 70 in the rear......
