Strange ABS Light Issue after Spring Install
Strange ABS Light Issue after Spring Install
I installed my rear leaf springs and disconnected the ABS plug that sits on top of the rear diff. I also disconnected the rear emergency brake cable on the driver side. I forgot to reconnect the ABS plug and started up the truck. Of course the ABS and BRAKE dummy light comes on and stays on. Okay, no problem, I turn off the truck and reconnect the ABS plug and Ebrake cable. Restart and the ABS and BRAKE light come on again and stay on.

***??? The connectors are clean and I do not have my E-brake on. The 2 lights will not go off.

Anyone know what the problem is? Why would the BRAKE light be on too?

Thanks!
Re:Strange ABS Light Issue after Spring Install
If it's like many of the other "trouble codes" on these trucks, it will go away after three or four starts in which the problem is not present.
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Re:Strange ABS Light Issue after Spring Install
If it does not go away after a few starts you could try disconnecting the battery for a while. I have cured quite a few "strange" problems by leaving the battery disconnected overnight. I can't give a logical reason for this but when I disconnect the battery I leave the ignition switch in the "on" position until just before I reconnect the battery. Cured my last ABS problem on a Dakota this way.
Re:Strange ABS Light Issue after Spring Install
Isn't there a lever arm that attaches to the springs that tells the ABS how loaded the truck is? That way the brakes are proportioned front to back. I think there is a TSB on the proportioning lever and spring replacement here:

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/05-04-98.htm
Bruce
