Still Crappy Fuel Mileage

Still getting right around 14mpg.

Did an bunch of service to my truck two weekends ago: new clutch, all fluids drained/refilled, new fan belt, and dropped the fuel tank with the intention of cleaning it. Problem with the fuel tank was that apparently the guy who owned the truck before me lost the LP, and had the dealer replace it. The LP is now in the tank. The lid on the top of the tank is like plastic welded on - we tried everything to get it off, and finally gave up and put the tank back on.

Truck runs a little rough, but not bad. As long as I don't put my foot into the skinny pedal, no (or very little) smoke. If I want to pass someone, and get the revs up to 2200 or higher, a bunch of black smoke.

A repair shop wants to charge me $1600 to pull the injectors and put them on a test machine to see if they are ok, and put the motor on a dyno. For the lack of a couple of miles per gallon - I could drive this thing until I die and still not recoup my cost for that!!

Is there any way to check and adjust timing? How about testing the VP and injectors to make sure the correct fuel ratio is going to the cylinders?

Any ideas from all you wise and trusted veterans of the Cummins World?

pull iat and map sensor clean them, if that dont work i wouldn't spend that kind of money on testing injectors....put new ones in yourself rv275 or better.the most i ever got quoated for just labor on replacing the injectors was $300....and u can buy the rv's for $300 total of 600. the dyno shouldn't cost u more then $125.00 u are going to be ripped off at those prices.black smoke usually indicates a rich condition. i would check to see if air cleaner is clean, if yes make sure all the intercooler boots are on good and tight and no holes. if boots are ok u should pressure check the intercooler for leaks.black smoke=not enough air. lastly make sure your wastegate is not frozen in a closed or partialy closed position.

Have you checked you fuel pressure yet. It could be low pressure and a starving vp44.

Can someone give me a suggestion on a fuel pressure guage? I already have EGT and Boost from the chip controller. I would rather mount it inside, but don't know where to install, how much they cost, or what to consider like getting one with or without an isolator...
