Starter again

Two weeks ago replaced my starter with a new not rebuilt unit. Heading home after Christmas shopping and nuth'in. Not even a click. Weather is gross, 1 foot of snow and hovering around zero.... think lying down on a slurpee matress. I tried to jump the solenoid from the starter lug and still nothing. I whacked the solenoid but still no action. Got to go to Vancouver Island tomorrow to visit Mom, will have to fix it when I get back. Hopefully it will warm up a bit as it is going to be a roadside repair. I will check to make sure I have 12 at solenoid wire when keying starter before I pull the starter. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? Thanks for any help.

Rule out battery, cables, wiring & switches first. Make sure batteries are charged (12.7 = full) & cables are clean & tight (use meter & measure voltage drop.) With key to start & you should have full battery voltage to the small terminal on the starter. If not, you can run a wire from + battery terminal to starter. There is a switch on the clutch pedal or tranny if you have auto. Check a wiring diagram or it may be marked on the fuse box cover. If that all checks out, pull starter & bench test. Look at contacts in solenoid but they should be good if it's new.

Friends truck (gasser) was doing the same every now and then. Wouldn't even click, etc. Turned out to be his battery cables were a little loose. One day we were in town and it wouldn't start so I just moved the battery cables around and it started.

Hopefully yours is something this easy, good luck!

I notice you have a transmission temp gauge so you must have an Automatic. Have you tried starting in Neutral?

Starter

I bought the starter from the local auto parts outlet, wasn't much more than a rebuilt starter so I bought it. Don't know where it was manufactured, I will look at the warranty card when I get back home. I did run through the trans selector when it wouldn't start, will it start in neutral? Happy holidays everyone.

Yes, it will start in neutral (if everything else is correct)
