Starter?

For about a month, maybe twice a week I've only been getting a "click" on the first turn of the key. Turn it again and it starts right up. Yesterday when leaving my shop it started right up but I still heard a whining noise. Shut it back off, quick and restarted it. It was fine. Tried it about 3 more times and it happened one more time.

Must be the starter not disengaging now? Just replace it?

Thanks

Sounds like a bendix... I've usually just replaced starters with this problem. Unfortunately I cannot offer insight as to the fixing of such a problem on the cummins.

I've taken apart starters on cars and atv's, but I've had the problems return on more than 1 occasion.
For me: It would have to depend on how easy it is to install/remove the starter and how much extra time you have to dink with it.

Here's a rebuild site that I'm sure has been around this forum a few times. Its probably not going to be 100% helpful but might give you an idea.

Thanks for the link. I think I've decided to just replace it. I haul a 30' gooseneck around and the thought of it not starting isn't pleasant
