Started to high Idle on its own..
Hey guys.
So the other day I went out to start my truick in the morning and saw I forgot to plug it in. (it got down to 4*F over night and was 9* outside when started)
I cycled the grid heater twice before starting just to be sure it was warm as could be. Still had a kinda rough start but once it started it was fine.
After about a minute of idleing at my normal 800 rpm, it started to climb on its own! It got to 1200 rpm before I tapped the break and it went right back down to normal 800.
Another minute later it did the same thing, starting going up on its own. This time I let it get to 1300 rpm before tapping the break. After 5 minutes of idleing and doing it twice, I set off cause I was gonna be late. Hasnt done it again, and its never done it before.
I checked codes, got.. P0122. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0122 (this was the best code discription I could find.
Could this be because of a battery problem / have to do with how cold it was and no plug in of the truck?
Any help would be great. TIA.

The factory high idle will do exactly as you have described. At 4 degrees if you had left it longer untouch it should have dropped to a 3 cylinder high idle. The first time you hear that you will think something is majorly wrong but it is normal. If I remember correctly the high idle is triggered when the block temp is less than 32 degrees and it has been idling for a minute or two. The 3 cyl mode starts at 15 degrees.
It is a factory option but wasn't in the original flash of my ecm. I had the dealer reflash the ecm while the truck was in the shop for a warranty item. They showed me in the computer where it was now an option and turned on by default in the new flash. This was probably in 2001 or 2002.
Maybe it did only get to 1200 the second time, I was standing outside the truck havin a smoke so I was lookin at tach on an angle.
So it is a factory thing huh. Wow that sure lays down some nerves.
I thought the high idle when cold didnt start till common rails.
That still leaves the 0122 TPS code though. I just checked for codes 3 days ago and had none. TPS one didnt pop up till after it freaked me out with the high idle.
Could these be related or should I be worring about my TPS now?

I would guess it installed when you borrowed the Smarty. From what I have read when you go back to stock with the Smarty it leaves the high idle installed. If the high idle freaked you out wait til the 3 cylinder kicks in - sounds like a bucket of bolts in a paint shaker. For the 3 cylinder to kick in it needs to be very cold - mine kicks in once or twice a season here in upstate NY.

I dont believe so its based on the temp readings only. either dealer flash or smarty for the 3 cycle. this last week temps were around 12 but truck plugged in so mine did not do high idle. the next day I did not plug in and the truck about 1-2 min after start up high idle kicked in. went back in the house made coffee and went to go to work and it already kicked back to normal idle dont know how long it will last I guess untill the computer is reading a certain temp. it doesnt get cold enough here to have the 3 cycle I can flash it on the smarty if I want but you cannot just turn it on when you want with the smarty. I would have to look at www.madselectronics.com and read about the 3 cycle for the smarty maybe it explains the "about" temps that it would engage.
Wow that would be pretty cool if it was from the Smarty I borrowed. Well, either way its cool. I thought high idle didnt start till common rails.
Yep smarty install will put in on your truck even when you use smarty to put it back to stock. I like it. On my 01 i cannot use the cruise thing. But i understand that some of the older models had that feature. I believe you turn the cruise on and hit the set excel until you get the rpm you want.
My high idle works great when first started, yesterday was -30 and it went to high idle after a few minutes of running. I drove for an hour to a freinds place than went in and let it run for about an hour. When i came out temp had dropped to cold on the gauge but it was idling slow, should not the high idle kicked in after it dropped to a certain degree? It was still -30 outside.
