to smoke or not to smoke?

OK, another Noobie question.....

I just bought my 99 and see you guys talking about getting smoke and when you don't see it you wonder if something is wrong. I always thought smoke was BAD. My old VW Diesel Golf smoked near the end of its life. Can you Guys tell me more?
My 99 is stock as far as I can tell.

???

Re:to smoke or not to smoke?

The smoke you read about on here is from guys that have turned up their trucks.
They are putting more (more than stock) amount of fuel through the engine.
In a diesel, fuel=power. (theres more to it than this, but Im keeping it simple).
Extra fuel is seen as black smoke at the exhaust.

If your interested in getting more power out of your truck, spend some time in the "High Performance - Aftermarket Accessories" section.
Those guys will drain your savings account... I mean, those guys will get you all set up!

Thank you!

I guess I'll have to wait 'cause the bank account is empty already. Very cool though, I'll check it out and hopefully get all "learned-up". Thanks again, you folks are very helpful and I thank you for letting me be a part of your site.

I dont want to get too detailed, thats why we have the High Performance section.
However, the idea is to get more fuel, then you need more air.
Once you get more air, you'll need even more fuel.

Its all just a matter of $$$ ;D

Re:to smoke or not to smoke?

I love to see the coal blowing from the stacks too, but keep in mind that every ounce of black smoke is unburnt diesel which is cooling your cylinder temps and stealing power away from your truck. When we're tuning a truck, we don't mind seeing some smoke when off-boost, but once you've hit 8 or 10 PSI, that smoke had better be cleaning up, or you aren't generating the power you should be.

So Smoke = Good and bad ;D
