smoke is back.
smoke is back.
ok so i posted about a smoke diagnosis a few weeks back. the problem went a way for a while, then the truck threw codes and started smoking again. the smoke is bluish whet with hints of black in it. the truck uses no oil. I also have the trans dropping in and out of overdrive. the battery cables are clean. the following codes are shown 622, 743, 753, 1765, and 1693. i installed a mystery switch so 743,753, and 1765 are probably from using the switch. the one than makes me wonder is the 622. i have seen where faulty alternators cause the overdrive problem and I am wondering if noisy power from the alternator is somehow causing the truck to over fuel? any thoughts before i buy an alternator?
well i re cleaned the battery connections today. maybe that will slow down the hunting for over drive. I will get some batteries for my oscope in a while and check and see if the 12v supply has any noise on it. i am betting that i will need to have an alternator for it but my main concern is that the alternator is switched thru the ecm. man that would suck if i had to replace it. i guess the saving grace is that it's a good excuse to upgrade to something a little peppier.
as for the smoke, i tore into the turbo today and found an unusual amount of oil sludge at the compressor wheel. i am thinking i lost an oil seal on the turbo shaft. i ordered a rebuild kit from high tech turbo in salt lake. man i like that place, great service and great prices. we will see if that solves my smoke issue.

i recently had a problem with my truck searching, no for overdrive but locking and unlocking torque converter. put in two new batters. then i wrapped the ground wire from the passenger side battery going behind towards alternator with aluminum foil and taped it. no more searching. seems like the shifting is better thoughout.
yeah i guess the pcm is pretty sensitive to noise on the supply side. the batteries are pretty old and are on the list for replacement but i wanted to save up the cash before jumping in. i re cleaned the battery cables and that seems to have cleared up the smoke issue and the searching issue for now but the alternator is acting whacky. i guess i will have to see what else it throws out at me and solve all of the problems one at a time.
i haven't seen any evidence that the apps is out yet. if it does go bad i will order a timbo1 replacement. cleaning the battery cables again seems to have helped a bunch although they weren't that dirty. i have a feeling that i will be doing batteries and possibly an alternator soon. we will see.
