Silencer ring?

I have seen alot of you guys saying your silencer ring is removed. What exactly does the silencer ring do? I have some modest performance mods to my truck. BD intake edge juice and afe filter Magna flo 4 in exhaust with muffler delete. BD lift pump. Isspro guages (boost, pyro, fuel pressure). I asked my local diesel shop about it when i put my filter in. They said I should leaveit in. I would like more info on it. Will I gain anything by taking it out?

The only thing you will gain is more turbo whistle. Some like the louder turbo sound, some dont. I took the silencer ring out of my 04.5 and left it out, I liked the sound because I had the stock air box, and it sounded good, not obnoxious. On the other hand I took the Silencer ring off my 98 and decided to put it back in because it was too obnoxious at highway cruising speed. I have an AFE cold air intake, and with the ring out, it would pierce your ears in the cab pulling hills at 60-70 mph. I think its mostly personal preference, and it also depends on you intake setup. I have never heard anyone on this site say that its bad to take it out. I dont believe taking the ring out will damage the Turbo. Hope this helps.

Welcome

As far as your question no, no performance gains from removal but you get more turbo sound. I tried it for a few months and put mine back on (I must be getting old).

Please fill out the rest of your sig with the mods posted for future questions. Good start btw

Does it make more turbo whistle in the cab or does it make it louder outside?

makes it louder in the cab and outside. not hard to take out. jus get a small screwdriver and work the snap ring out around the inlet. if u dont like the sound, put it back in!

Is the silencer ring located inside the air intake tube or is it on the turbo

I had mine out when I had a BHAF. I later upgraded to a Scotty Air II (cut the cowl hole for it too) and kept the ring out. After the novelty of a really loud turbo wore off I put the ring back in. Now it sounds just right.

fullpull108, the ring is located in the turbo. Just take off the intake hose and you should see it. There is no performance benefit with it in or out, just your preference on hearing it better or not.

The silencer ring is in the turbo, pull the intake off the front of the turbo and you should see a snap ring just inside the front of the turbo. You can work it out with a small screw driver and the the silencer ring just falls out.

I took mine out and put it back in. Maybe it's just me, but mine kinda sounded like one of those little party balloons you blow into when the turbo wound up. It was annoying and kind of embarrassing. My big ole truck going down the road sounding like an 8 year old birthday party lol.

I took mine out a few weeks ago but I think I am getting ready to put it back in. Inside the cab with the windows how it sounds like speaker whine from a crappy sound system.
