Question Should I have the Injectors Cleaned?

My truck doesn't run right while pulling decent loads and the dealer tells me that he wants to pull my stock injectors and put them in a cleaning machine. He assures me that it will be "night and day" after he cleans them. While putting the hammer down uphill, it runs fine, but when I am just trying to maintain speed with medium throttle, I can hear the engine changine tone and feeling like it wants to cut out.

Has anyone had this done? Was it worth the hundred dollars or so to have it done? Could you really tell a "big" difference?

Thanks for any advice. Truck has 54,000 miles and I have just started to use Power Service in my fuel two tanks ago. Seems to run worse now than before. Maybe the PS knocked something loose? Fuel filter was also just change two weeks ago with Fleetgurd from local Cummins dealer.

HELP

My advice would be to get a fuel pressure gauge, as I wouldn't be surprised if it were your lift pump causing some problems. Beyond that I would say skip the injector cleaning and go straight to a set of Don M's injectors. A bit more money, but let me tell you that you will MOST DEFINITELY notice the difference then.
Good luck with your problem

I have never heard of the dealer removing and cleaning diesel injectors. That doesnt sound right to me. Funny you are having trouble with PS. I second getting a fuel pressure gauge. Even if its a tester with a hose so you can run it out in the cab for driving results. Maybe you got some bad fuel and your filter is plugging up. Or possibly you could be having LP or VP problems. Check into those before you spend ANY money with the dealer. The LP and VP would fall into warranty. FREE!

I'm a little surprised the dealer didn't suggest checking the lift pump as opposed to cleaning the injectors... well, maybe I shouldn't be surprised they want to do the 'work' that they can actually charge money for. I'd suggest checking your fuel pressure before you worry about cleaning the injectors.

I agree with all the above on the FP gauge, it really isnt a option on VP equiped trucks in my opinion. As far as pulling and cleaning the injectors I think they are trying to lighten your wallet.
