SCA's
SCA's
When I had a "big" truck a regular service included testing the coolant for "suplemental coolant additive". If this was lower than spec you either changed out the water filter with one that had the appropriate # of SCA units or you could add the SCA in liquid form (for engines not using water filters). The purpose of this stuff is to prevent pinhole corrosion from swiss cheezing the liners (very bad). I haven't seen anything about SCA's with these smaller diesels. Is it not a problem? I don't see any mention of it in the manual. Do they figure the truck will wear out before the corrosion becomes a problem? I don't reckon I'll be puttin 800K on the 1 ton, it ain't all that comfortable for 1 thing...
Re:SCA's
As far as I know, cavitation erosion and cylinder wall porisity are not issues with the baby Cummins, and SCA is not required.

That phenomenom, though, has been a problem on the Navistar/Ford V-8 configured diesel, and SCA is required every 15,000 miles.
