I need to replace the clutch in my 98 dodge cummins truck. It is a 5 speed and I do some hauling with it, mostly loads under 7000 lbs. Any suggestions for a replacement clutch? Also, how hard is it to replace the clutch yourself? Any ideas on how long the process takes? Thanks.

South bend is the only way to go.<br><br> If you like an excelent clutch and an easy pedal. Lots of us have a s.b. clutch and I havent heard any complaints, or at least none from me. ;D

 

I have a similar truck - 98 5-speed. Talked to Peter at South Bend Clutch - told him my plans, and he overnighted me the kit. It was easier than I expected - just take your time getting the transfer case and crossmember out...<br><br>I'd call it more like 6 hours for the average, shadetree mechanic.<br><br>Email me if you want more details, I'd be glad to help. Can't say enough good about South Bend Clutch - they walked me through the process, and it's been 20,000 miles since then - no clutch chatter, no issues at all. Installing my DD stage 3's this weekend - bought them from KatDiesel...

I got a southbend con O put in and I love it two thumbs up from me <br><br>oh yeah and split the tranny and t-case when you do it, it's only 4 bolts and it makes life much easier (the tranny's heavy enough by itself)<br><br>

 

I've replaced 2 clutches in the past six months because of a Centerforce mistake purchase the first time. I didn't split the tranny and case either time. I did make sure I used a quality jack and anchored it tightly to tranny though. As far as time for the project, it took about 6 hours of labor the first time and more on the second one because of a spline burr holding me up on the dual disk I installed. One thing I like about our trucks is the simplicity of the job as a whole. There a very few hang-ups like wire bundles, etc... Good luck with the install. andy

 

you don't have to split the tranny/ t-case but it only took like 2 minutes<br><br>the t-case can be lowered down by hand and the the tranny's pretty easy to balance on the floor jack <br><br>by all means do it any way you please, just thought I'd throw that out there

 

Thanks to everyone who replied. I talked to the Peter at South Bend and I think I will be going with one of their clutches. If you don't mind dieselgeek, (or any one else that could help) I may ask you for some more guideance on replacing the clutch.
