Rearend assy options?

Guy ran a red light and nailed me in the RR wheel and killed the rearend. Got body work fixed now it is time for the rearend to be replaced. It currently has a Dana 60 with drum brakes. Should I upgrade to rear disc since I am going to have to get a salvage unit anyways? What is required to upgrade this and what year models fit in place of the 2001 rear. Since it is a 2001 I hope one from a newer 3rd gen will fit so I can get one with the lowest miles. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have been a tech for 18 years for GM so the technical part is no biggy.

You have either a Dana 70 if it is an auto or a 80 if it is a stick or a DRW.

Personally, I think the AAM axle from the newer ones are not as strong. I do think they bolt in though.

If it were me, I would put an 80 under it no matter what, rebuild it if necessary.

AAM's also do not have 3.55's as a gear ratio, so if thats what your truck is (if 4wd), then it would be a no go. I would also look for an 80 to swap in.

So I need to look for an 80 with disc brakes then. Is there anything that you know of that i will have to switch hydraulicly if I switch from drum to disc? I will surely stay away from th newer rears from what you say. The ratio is 4.10 auto by the way
