I had a 308 in a first gen. It did everything that I wanted it to...hauled car trailer, etc. Although there is was no overdrive stock, I had a Gear vendor that made about the same ratio as my 354 but without lock up.

I liked the 308

Unless you had a gear vendors under/overdrive like Smokee, I think you would hate having 308 gears. Especially if you do ANY towing.

3.08 would be an OK gear for an empty truck cruising the highways and byways. Towing, well I suspect that it would be a bugger to get the load moving from a dead stop especially when going up hill.

You would likely being pulling it out of OD much more frequently than with a 3.54. Might be a better choice if you did not have an OD tranny but as Mntom mentioned, it would be a little sour out of the hole with a load.

Can you say "arf arf". Unless you don't have an O.D., I would stay away from 3.08's. IMO 3.55's-3.73's -4.10's would be a better choice of gears.

I don't see what overdrive has to do with it, both trucks would have the same first gear ratio in the tranny, so OD or no OD same tranny ratio!!

I think what we mean is that if you did not have an OD tranny then you would have a nicer highway gear with the 3.08 than the the 3.54. But you are right, FIRST gear is the same for both autos so regardless of tranny the bottom end is going to stink, especially loaded.
However, the addition of an OD gear certainly makes your final drive ratio quite a bit higher than with the 3 speed, so even with 3.54 - 4.10 you can still have a decent highway gear. Running 4.10's with a 3 speed does not make for a very pleasant or efficient highway cruiser.
