Rear Axle Seal

Ok I have a Dana 70 and the right wheel seal is leaking pretty bad :'( . I have changed out the seal on a Dana 60 several times but, the Dana 70 is totally new to me ???. When I tear into it I am going to replace my bearing to. I would like to hear what yall think of this little project and ANY advice you might have.

Same thing but a little bigger, carry on, don't let common sense and fear hold you back. PK

Re:Rear Axle Seal

I'm sorry I meant I have done the standard 9 1/4 axle . My old 97, 1500 4X4 had it. I've never done a 60 or 70 before.

It's not too big a deal. You probably don't need the bearing replaced. By the book you will need a new axle nut and lock. And Dodge really thinks they are nice stuff, costs a lot. Do look at the torque deal though, you tighten up to a torque and then back off a set amount. You will also need a socket that fits the nut. Napa has them.

Re:Rear Axle Seal

I don't know if you have done a rear axle with full float before. You need a heavy hammer, remove the axle bolts and hit the axle end sharply in the center and it will break loose. I personally do not believe in gaskets for them. I stone the surfaces smoothe, clean them with alcohol and use sylicone sealer on the flange. Never had one leak on any size truck. Make sure you torque the bolts well so that no looseness can devolop.

No I have never messed with a axle this big before. What do you think is causing it to leak in the first place?

Re:Rear Axle Seal

They just go bad, I had one go out on mine on one side, replaced it and never had a problem again. Be sure to get some brake cleaner and clean the brake assembly out real good while the drum is off.
