Anyone pull a radiator out of a 2002? Just bought the truck, it has 174k and runs 190 on the temp gauge. It looks like all I would have to do is pull the 2 top bolts, tranny lines and upper and lower radiator hoses, is there more to it than that?

pull the upper tie bar first then the radiator. oh, and have a really big container handy to catch all the coolant. there is alot of it. not so much if you pinch the radiator hoses off. hope that helps.

 

well wait untill about 8:00 in the morinin and i can tell ya. i have to pull mine, i have a pin hole leak that im gettin fixed

 

Pulling the radiator is fairly easy and easy to figure out as you go. Unbolt the fan shroud, two top radiator bolts, slide the coolant and washer fluid reservoirs out of the way (they are a litle tricky, pry wth a screw driver) and lift the radiator out of it's bottom slots.

There is no trans lines running into the radiator.

 

And if your just cleaning the radiator out what I did and this is just me but I took the top two bolts loose from the truck so the radiator tiped back and i cleaned the front off then i reinstalled and cleaned the back off. Now my radiator was no were near as big as a mess as some but it workd for me.

 

You may have gotten it pretty clean, but on our two trucks I layed the radiator out against the wall at the car wash and blasted them back and forth with the high pressure, getting 90%+ of 100K worth of crap out of the radiator.

If you got 75%+ of the stuff and that didn't take long I'd say good job.

 

Ya RJF my trucks radiator was no were near as bad as some i just blasted it from the front with the air hose and the back with the hose and I got alot of crap out of there mostly bugs n dirt and other matter but mine never got a bath in oil cause i got my bottle relocated in time. I also was not having a problem with it getting hot it stayed at 190 no matter what now it seems to take forever to to get to 190 so

 

I just did mine, you'll need a five gallon bucket to catch the coolant. I also stuffed a length of hose on the end of the petcock to direct the fluid into the bucket instead of all over the floor. As others have said you'll need to pull the radiator shroud (4) bolts and the wiper fluid reservoir plus the two radiator mounting bolts. No need to pull the coolant bottle. While I was there I took the opportunity to clean the front of the block, top of the power steering pump and all other areas covered in the usual goop. I also replaced the belt, thermostat, and upper/lower hoses.

One thing I had to do was loosen the intercooler mounting bolts as the intercooler boot prevented the petcock from turning.

 

NAPA list an OE T-stat as 190 degree, if that's the case it's not running hotter than I'd like. My 2001 runs 180 degrees and takes a while to get there.

 

well i got it out and both the seams on the tanks were craked, and it was cheaper to get a new one than to get it fixed. it was $318 out the door. it wasnt too bad takin in/out. the hardest part is gettin the bottom hose off. ya have to have a set of hose clamp plyers.
