I drove on my p0216 code for over 50K miles. My code sprung from an electronics problem and not a mechanical one. My answer is to keep a cell phone handy with a local towinc co. number programmed in.....LOL

Really, there is no way to tell when the chihuahua will bite the bullet....

BTW, if you get a dead pedal syndrome while driving, try cycling ignition key off/on while driving, it resets the electronics on the VP-44 and it will run fine for a while. Just be careful if you are in a predicament and need to get out someones way quickly, cause dead pedal won't afford you that luxury.

Good luck,

Gary

Uh... I think its failed already, It just hasnt died yet. DC will tell you not all 0216 codes are failures, but I bet that 99% of them are. Better start looking at repalcements before she does die.

It might be a good idea to go ahead and order a replacement VP44 to have with you if/when it dies completely.

OK this is Odd.
I have been monitoring my LP Pressure as always and it never dropped below 13 at idle. Now the Code has disappeared. Has anyone got false 2016 codes? and is there a way to test the VP44 before I spend $1500?
Thanks to all who have responded.

It'll be back.

The dealer that replaced mine said that (warranty wise) once they see the 0216 it's an automatic VP/LP replacement. I have heard differently here, but that was my experience.

The idea of running it till it dies is all fine and dandy, till you want to go more than 100 miles from home. I'd hate to be 3/4 of the way to my vacation destination and see a plume of white smoke............
I'd give it a few hundred miles, if you get more and more deal pedal, it's gonna go.

I'll let you know Monday. I don't have any codes showing yet, but I'm having other issues which suggests the pump is winding down.

its a 2-3 hr install, depending on your tools, and experience. The 0216 can be thrown by low lift pump pressures too.

Ramlovingvet,

The pump install is actually pretty staight forward. It was my first time ever doing one on a Cummins, having worked on diesel generators in the Army I felt comfortable taking it on, plus I had some back up when needed . The only special tool you need is a puller with 2 8 x .125 50 mm bolts, get some pretty strong ones as I bent a couple before buying some SS bolts. One thing to be aware of prior to pump removal is to make sure the key way is at the 12 o'clock postion. When you put the new pump in make sure the key way is in the same postion as the on the came out. If the pump doesn't side in just rotate the gear slowly in the timing case and it will go.

These are just some highlights, let me know if you need anymore detail.

Thanks Mike.
Was the puller a custom thing? I have regular gear pullers. If it was custom where did you get it?
Thanks again
