oil/fluid grade questions
oil/fluid grade questions
Engine Oil:
The Hayes manual says I should be using API grade CE or CE/SG motor oil. When I bought this truck it had a can of oil under the seat that meets grade CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF/SL, SJ, SH. My local auto parts store carries diesel oil with grades of CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF/SL & SJ. Can I use any of these latter oils?
Trans fluid:
Hayes says "ATF+." My local auto parts store sells "ATF+4." Can I use that?

yes, in short as long as it's the correct weight, any oil meeting CI-4 is fine.
Grades are increasing in letter in some cases in number in other. C means Commercial (diesel rated- NOT Compression engine as many believe) and S means Service grade which refers to Gasoline. C rated is better performing oil and CAN be used in Gas engines under heavy use or severe duty.
The Haynes recommendation is a prime example why they're books are so cheap and almost worthless- that oil spec has been obsolete since 1990!
Buy an FSM instead and use your owner manual for oil recommendations.
the I/H/G/F are grade levels- usually the newest is the next alphabet letter- J is newer than I, and usually the newest is best but not always- CI is better in the 12V engines then the CJ oil.
Check out these if you want verification- the last details the grade ratings by years and more info on their specs.

Tranny fluid I believe so. The ATF+4 is the newest that is available non oem and covers 2001 and Up I think (my wife's intrepid needs it). I think ATF+3 is the recommended- check your owner manual.

The ATF+4 you can get from your local auto parts store is fine.
