NV5600 concern
Don’t think this is a real issue but I am worried about tranny it always takes a second for it to work its way into the gear that I want. No grinding, but it typically has a bump bump feel into gear when shifting. Not a smooth transition. Is this normal? It is more apparent when the truck is cold.
How often should nv5600 trannys be serviced? I’ve got over 100K+. However i have record from previous owner and the clutch had to be replaced at 63000 so i would assume that is when it was serviced last.
WOuld dumping more tranny fluid into it help if so since i dont know what is in it probably Dodge stuff what should i get to put in there and were should i get it?

This may not be the same as what you are speaking, but I will put it up here for anybody that may have this prob.
I bought my 03 3500 w/ 6 speed used with 134,000 miles on it. From day one I never liked the shifting of it. I could not feel the "gates" and there was too much play in the stick. I had the trans totally rebuilt and figured any play would be taken care of. $3,500. later new trans, same old shifting. I wrote it off as a 5600 thing. Then one day, around 200,000 miles on the truck, I notice my shifter getting closer to the dash on the 3 and 5 shifts and closer to my seat on the 2,4,6 shifts. I knew what that meant. Few miles later the shifter falls to the floor and I end up shifting with my hand around the boot.
What it turns out to be is that there is a piece of rubber that the shifter slides down over to isolate the engine vibes. Well the shifter slipped off.
I sprayed water on the rubber and used a rubber mallet to beat the shifter back on. It's like a whole new trans now. Shifts better than my F350 dump. (i had complained that the dump shifted nicer than my dodge before)

You might want to go to Redline's website to find a retailer near you. I run 6 qts of redline at 74K miles and it shifts way better than with the stock lube that went 55K miles.
The nv5600 doesn't like the cooler temps and that rubber isolator on the shift rod really slops the gates up. Mine will "walk" into 3rd and 4th when cold but smooths up as it warms. Its the most loose trans I've ever had when it comes to shifting. I'm gonna put the BD short shifter on it as $ allows.

I recently had my NV5600 torn down because of a faulty diaignosis by a petty good repair shop. Anyway mine had 185,300 miles on it. The condition of the bearings and races in side were almost perfect. I've always used the Penzoil Synchromesh Tranny fluid. Another quart in the box may help.
I forgot to tell the tranny shop to drill and tape another hole in the upper case while it was apart. Darn!
I may post some pictures I took when it was torn down later.

Pull the shift tower off the top and inspect the little "plastic" cup that the shifter end rides in. Replace it if needed and then dump 6 full quarts of either Redline or Amsoil in it.
After that, it's regular oil changes. You'll know when it's time because it will tell you by the way it shifts.
I change mine out every 20,000 and have so far not had a problem what so ever.

I'd recommend 6qts. of oil of your choice. I'm trying the redline mtl my next go around. Stay away from the RoyalPurple Syncromax. I have that in mine now and don't care for it. And from what I've been told, its slightly thinner than the factory stuff and breaks down a lot quicker. The factory stuff is actually pretty good too. The 5600's never were a real smooth shifting tranny to begin with. I have the exact same problem as you, but its getting worse. My clutch master cylinder is starting to leak though, so i've probably got some air in the system, or maybe its just not moving the slave cyl. enough. Either way, I hope it shifts better once I replace my clutch and the hydraulics with SouthBend stuff.
I forgot to mention that a lot of guys run Amsoil and have had good results too. If you add thru the shifter cover, put an extra qt in. It gets more lube to the rear bearing.

Ok i think i already know this, but im going to ask it any way. and please feel free to reference me to some kinda manual that i can get access to. What is the specs on the fluid. I think its __-85w that is synthetic. Educate me hear because i dont trust any of the local shops since all three that i have talked to have told me different things.
Thanks guys sorry for the dumb question.

Okay guys, this may be a stupid question but how are you getting 6 qts in your 5600? I barely got 5 qts of redline in until it started running out the fill hole on the side. Are you guys drilling a hole higher or something?
For 6 quarts, you pull the shift tower off the top of the trans and dump it in the top.
You can either run Redline MTL or Amsoil MTF. I've run both very successfully and have had zero problems with either. In my case, it's easier for me to find Amsoil so that's what I run even though I still have 6 quarts of Redline sitting on the shelf.
The extra quart is mostly for the rear bearings. They do get oiled when you run the regular fill but a lot of the NV5600 failures that I and others have come across are related to rear bearings. The extra fluid in your fill makes sure that the rear bearings get way more than adequate oiling.
I don't know how many of you run a temp guage like myself but I have found with mine and others that I know of, these transmissions do run warm, especially when towing and using 6th gear. It's nothing to worry about but the extra fluid will help with the heat.
The biggest thing with the NV5600 is changing the oil. As strange as it sounds, you will know when to change it because the shifting "feel" takes a dump and shift quality falls way off.

The Haynes manual does not give an actual weight of oil. It just says to use Chrysler part #........... or equivalent. The guy I bought my truck from put Lucas in the trans before I picked it up. I changed it to Pennsoil Synchromesh last week b/c it was starting to act up. The Synchromesh actually had the Chrysler part # on the bottle. Put in 5 qts and the trans seems much happier.
