I lost 5th gear on the way home the other day. No noise no grinding and no 5th gear. Wondering if this can be fixed without pulling the transmission. Probably wishful thinking I know.
The nut fell off the end of the shaft where 5th gear is held on.
You pull the transfer case, pull the tail off the transmission, put 5th gear back in place, put the updated nut from the dealership with the little locking allen heads back onto the shaft and reassmble.
I had mine done by a friends shop. He needed some work and I didn't have time. The job was rated at a 4 hour job. With parts and $60 worth of tranny fluid (can't just use 90 wt) it cost me a total of $340 which included new bushing and seal for my T-case output.
Its an easy job if you want to do it yourself and it should be pretty cheap to have a shop do it too. Its not problem to drive the truck to the shop.
