Not Spooling Up

We just installed my new block in my truck, but something is wrong w/ the turbo. When I am driving it spools sometimes, and sometimes it just falls on its face @ about 1200-2000 rpms, but once I get it over the 2000rpm mark it seems to spool up OK...

Any Ideas?????

By the way I have a boost gauge just have'nt installed it yet!

it sounds like a fuel problem.......fuel is the #1 element to spooling a turbo

New injector pump, lift pump, vacum pump, filters and block....

I seriously doubt its a fuel problem, I going to disassemble the TURBO this afternoon and put a new seal/bearing in it, but first I'm going to check the intercooler piping...

I have help from a mechanic (friend) that works at TEXAS REBUILD better know as :

http://www.turbochargers.com/

If it gets to that point...

I don't see a point in throwing any parts at the truck until you know where your boost is at.......you say you have a boost gauge....why don't you install it before you do anything else?

Who installed the IP? Can you verify if the key way was aligned properly? Does the truck run rough at all or is it slower than normal to start? Why was the block, IP and other stuff changed? When it is slow to spool up is there any black smoke?

No smoke, a friend of mine installed everything he owns a cummins shop here in houston. He thinks its the Turbo, but has'nt looked @ it, he out of town...

The truck runs great 99.9% of the time w/ no problems, but every now and then when I don't downshift, and the RPM's drop down around 1200 it drags till I reach about 2000 then it spools up fine...

I know these things lag, but when it does this it seems as if i don't have a turbo at all!!!

If you are not getting any smoke to speak of the turbo is not the problem. If it was you would have lots of smoke. The way it sounds it is a fuel related problem. Check your fuel pressure. The symptoms sound an awful lot like a VP problem.

Just because an IP is new doesn't mean it's good. You could have a bad IP out of the box.

like i said earlier.....a diesel truck will smoke like hell when the turbo is not working and the fuel is there for it............you are lacking fuel to start the fire to start the turbo to spool up to get the big truck going.............i installed a twin turbo on a buddys truck and there was stock injectors.....the thing felt dead as in when you floor it the truck would just chug along slowly untill the rpms would get around 2400 rpms and then it would finally build boost.........that is just because it had enough rpm to force the **** thing to go.....

Would a bad IP cause it only to do it every once in a while or would it be a persistant problem...

Like I said it only does it when I'm in a gear that is low rpm, for instance when I don't downshift.
Like when I should be in 2nd but I'm in 4th thats when it does it, as soon as I downshift and get the rpms up problem solved...

So is it normal for it to fall on its face like this or not, I figured it had enough torque to pull it through...

Hot news of the press...

Come to find out , the fuel filter has not been changed since the new block was installed... Imagine that!!!

I'm going to try that first, the IP and LP are only 3weeks old , bought new from dodge!!!

If thats not it I'm going to check the TPS sensor...

If this is the only time it happens....don't do it!
Not being a wise a$$. With med throttle at 1200 rpm you could be almost flooding the motor. If so, this condition will produce lots of smoke and take a while to clear out the cylinders. IF your sure there is no smoke when this happens....probably something different.

In either case...I would not expect boost to build when lugging the motor at 1200 rpm. And if you look at a dyno sheet...you'll see there isn't much torque at 1200 rpm to "pull it through".
