No Coolant gauge temp

No Coolant gauge temp
Driveing from Idaho to So calif I noticed my coolant temp gauge was just staying at 140 ,not working.
I just pulled the plug off and on the sending unit(the one by the top hose elbow at the front of the motor) to see if it had a bad connection.
Is it just a bad sending unit? Truck runs fine but Im wondering if a bad temp sender affects any other computer engine controls??
I havent realy fiddled with it yet...
