Newbie needs help. PLEASE!
 

New to the site, but see it is very helpful. I recently traded for a 01 2500 2wd automatic truck. It has picked up a bad miss in it, and at first, after reading on the site here, I thought it was the converter. But now it has got worse to the point that if it acts up when you are coming to a stop it will die. It will start right back up no problem at all. I checked the codes in the dash and got the 0234 code. New to the diesel world, but the way i'm reading on here i think the map sensor is bad. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I believe thats an over boost code. Is the truck stock or has there been any modifications? I've never heard of that causing a mis though.

To my knowledge the truck is stock. There is no tuner box or anything, but I have noticed somebody did put a new exhaust with a new muffler, unsure of what kind. Thanks.

P0234 over boost will cause ECM to derate power by defueling.
Inspect for a leak at the brass 90 degree fitting which screws into the turbocharger compressor housing. There SHOULD NOT be a hole in this brass fitting. A hole may have been drilled to intentionally alter the operation of the wastegate. To repair this problem, the brass fitting can be replaced with a commercially available 1/8 NPT 90 degree brass fitting.

You could also have a failed waste gate actuator.
A new kit has been released that will allow technicians to repair turbochargers with failed wastegate actuators. Wastegate actuators that have failed can cause low power complaints or noise complaints from air escaping out of the actuator.

That is what I have been thinkng, that it is in the wastegate system. Because you can be sitting still and all of a sudden the truck will surge and almost sounds like it just burps out the tailpipe. Thanks again for all the suggestions. Keep em coming.

That doesn't sound normal. What exactly happens?

I've been running for at least 30,000 mi with an over boost code (cleared multiple times with scanner). Sticky waste gate is causing it. No driveability problems. Max stock boost is supposed to be ~20# beyond which truck will defuel. I haven't noticed a change but am almost at redline so don't go past 25# boost. That said, wastegate should not cause any problems under stock boost limit. Look elsewhere for your miss.

Have you done the basics of oil and fuel filter change since you bought it?

Yes and when I changed the fuel filter it looked as good as the new I put in. After changing the fuel filter it seemed to help for two or three days. Now the truck will start right up and then just die just like the fuel system is losing prime. Any more help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may have two problems.... The code is showing one. But other things point to another. If it seems like your not getting fuel then you its a good bet that your not. I have seem many times on vehicles where are pretty clogged fuel filter keeps a weak pump going. Meaning the clogged fuel filter keeps pressure on the fuel pump. Then you replace the filter with a new one that flows better the pump now works longer/hard to keep up the pressure. A weak or failing fuel system wether its the supply pump or injection pump explains your symptoms. But I will say it does not confirm your code. That is why I say you may have two problems. But I would say for sure now you have a fuel problem. Wether it is supply pump or injection or possibly both now if it has been ongoing.

Just some info for you guys I filled my truck up the other day and I was gonna fill it completely up. When it got full it started running out on the ground. It looked like it was coming from the top of the tank. Just wondering if this could be some of my problem. Didn't know just curious. Thanks in advance.

Running or dripping? Obviously a leak but is it the fuel supply line, the return fuel line, cracked rubber plug, or somethings just loose. Time to climb under there and take a look.

You can follow the fuel lines all the way to the tank. Look for wet spots. Also look at the T fitting on the back drivers side of the head.

While you're under there, look for other oil, trans, brake etc leaks.

It was gushing out. Gonna try to get under it in the next couple of days and find out whats wrong. Thanks.
