Newb with questions

so i have been reading about the importance of a fuel pressure gauge the last few days..... i plan on gettin on ASAP......

so i started looking around on my truck..

the injection pump is directly under the black cover, which covers the throttle cable..... right??? it has all the high pressure steel lines coming out. right?

the lift pump it mounted on the block, on the drivers side below the fuel filter..... right?

if this is the case, the IP looks like it was replaced by the PO. the bolts are MUCH cleaner than the rest of the motor and the pump (assuming i know what im looking at) seems much cleaner.....

the lift pump seems INCREDIBLY dirty.... like its factory, original to the truck. dirty looking connections....

doesn't this seem strange? the motor is 100% factory except the edge box mounted on the fuse box.

doesn't it seem strange that the IP went out before the LP?? everything i have read says the LP goes out and takes out the IP with it. what would cause the IP to go out first?

Could be any number of reasons.

My VP44 went out with only 4K on the odometer.

56K later, I am still on the original lift pump.

Still don't know why mine gave up the ghost, but I'm thinking manufacturing defect, since it went out so quick.

get a spare "Campaign pump" from Cummins,$65. If you get the Vulcan kit, it moves the LP to the fuel tank, where it can be changed in 5 minutes. The Vulcan kit affords bigger fule lines, but more importantly, it eliminates the dreaded banjo bolts that are inthe fuel lines and can impede fuel flow. Banjo bolts are universally hated by eveyone.
Either pump can fail at any time, but it seems there are 3-5 LP failures(maybe 10?) for every VP44(IP). Certaily a failed LP will take the VP44 with it after some time.
This is the only major problem with the motor. Keep your oil & fuel filter changes accrding to the schedule.
