new with a ton of questions!

hello everyone, i am new on this forum. I do not own a diesel at this moment but wish to get what. I am a ford guy but!..... i love diesels. I would buy a ford diesel but i want a 6.0 and they are new so they are about 30,000$ for a new one. So instead i want to get an 01 cummins with a manual trans. Are these good trucks? what is the gas mileage? mpg? Do they require alot of maintanance? How does the manual tranny hold up? what kinda performance add-ons are there? O yah.. I also found a website that claims that there chip has a 5 position smoke setting.
The site is called www.dieseldynamics.com. Is this real or just a gimic? I love black smoke!lol... also... were is the best place (and most affordable)to buy smoke stacks? Thanks for all the help!

Welcome noob! I'd say you made a wise choice coming over to the CTD!

If you read about all the problems the 6.0's are having you might not be so interested.

2nd gens (98.5-02) are good trucks. The lift pumps are problematic which will kill the VP44 (read: expensive injection pump $1200). The injection pumps have been known to fail even with good fuel pressure. It's basically a crap shoot. The 5spd will hold up to 500 HP if driven reasonably, but the stock clutch will not.

I get 17mpg around town 12-13 towing 6K# going 80-90mph and 20 unloaded highway.

There are lots of performance add ons. You can get over 400hp for under $3000 easily. Fueling/timing boxes, programmers, injectors, turbos... the sky is the limit with these motors.

Gauges are a must to know what your motor is doing. EGT/boost/fuel pressure.

Use the search and read for a couple weeks. All the info you need is here.

Ya these trucks ARE awseome!! I have that box that u speak of, its very common....its made by Edge Products and its called the Comp. Just it alone doesn't blow much smoke.....it'll get a decent haze on 5x5 (top level) but no block out the sun sort of thing. They range from 600 to 700 depending where you get them. You need bigger injectors to blow some smoke if thats what your looking for. You could always put duct tape on ur air filter and get some good smoke Lol.....not recomended though. Good luck.

From what I understand the Cummins is quite a bit slower off the line with the I6 setup than are the Duramax and Powerstroke in the V8 setup. Has something to do with the length of stroke I believe. Where you lack in "quickness" you will make up for pulling on the highway with the torque I believe.

you wernt kidding....lots of questions. Kinda hard to answer them all. There is tons of reading in the forums - probably all you questions have already been answered.

btw, welcome. Once you go with a Cummins, youll soon forget about owning a Ford.

I believe 305 is about as large as you can fit under the truck, and they may rub a small bit. I believe the Dodges sit up higher than any of the other diesels. I know I've got 285 M/Ts on 16" alloys and it sits up high . . . much higher than the '04 F350 we took to Canada this year.

tons of questions but here is an attempt...

stacks: no idea, don't have them and don't personally know anybody with them... just do a search on stacks.

comp box: depends on where you buy it from but I think you can get one for around $600

intake: depends on what you get... a BHAF will cost you like $30 or a whole setup will run over $200.... stay away from K&N

injectors: depends on what you get... you want a ton of smoke, go with something in the +150hp range.... nozzles will be cheaper than actually getting new sticks... guess that's a range of $300 - $1100 depending on which route you go.

tires: I think some guys have put 35's on without a lift... I run 33's and they have plenty of clearance.

with all that said... you forgot a few important things... GAUGES, GAUGES, GAUGES... if you want to run those kind of mods, you have to have gauges... especially if you're going to tow with the truck. Clutch. I don't think your stock clutch is going to hold up to a Comp on the higher settings let alone with injectors on top of that. Turbo. You can do it with a stock turbo but an aftermarket turbo might serve you a little better on air flow with those mods, especially in the EGT department. Fuel System. Do a search on lift pump or VP-44 and you'll soon see that the fuel system needs to have some TLC even on a bone stock truck. Definitely a gauge here and with the extra fueling you're looking at, a pusher pump or other mod is probably in order. That should get you started.

smoke

If your lookin for smoke and dont really need large hp gain why not look into pullin delivery valves and havin then ground. Younger brother did this on his 98' lots of thick black smoke. lots of stories bout that. He also has 6" stacks that he did not buy already prefabed just took a little time. sorry no pics of truck. So there are other ways of gettin smoke and not spendin a lot of $ if your like me and on a tight budget. By the way welcome
